2024 Spring Team Preview: Barrington (RI)

BARRINGTON, R.I. - “We should be right there this year” is how head coach Vin Scandura views the upcoming high school season at Barrington, which a year ago lost to East Greenwich in the Division 2 state semifinals.

“Positionally and at the plate we should be pretty good,” pointed out the eighth-year head mentor, who has been in the coaching business more than 20 years, the last 10 at Barrington. “We’ll be young at catcher and pitcher.”

Three players that contributed, including two now playing in college, must be replaced in a program that reached the D-2 state semis in 2021 as well as last year.

“We play the game the right way,” Scandura said in describing a program that has reached the championship game one time in his tenure as head coach. “We feel we execute and are prepared situationally. We focus a lot on defense and pitching. Most of our starters now work in the offseason which is a reason for a lot of our success.

“We’re known as a two-out buy-in type of team that runs the bases well,” Scandura added. “It’s a pretty gritty group. This year we have a lot of kids that have been through the program.”

Ben Nowinski, a senior who converted from catcher to pitcher as a freshman, is the staff ace for Barrington.

“When he’s on, no one can hit him,” Scandura said of the Rhode Island College commit.

Junior Jack Lawson, the number three hurler for the Eagles last season, is back for his junior campaign with a pair of 2026 right-handers expected to play big roles this year, Alex Anderson and Nate Coutant.

Gabe Tanous, the seventh-rated senior shortstop in New England, is the anchor of the infield.

“I think he’s the best shortstop defensively in the state,” Scandura said of the team’s leadoff hitter, a Central Connecticut State signee.

Trevor Snow, a Keene State commit, will be at second base.

“The core of the team is the defense up the middle,” Scandura noted. “The two of them in the middle infield are as good as it gets in the state.”

Luke Tanous, called by Scandura “one of my best hitters” will bat in the two-hole and play catcher, while also seeing time at third base and outfield, with junior Chris Promades bringing depth behind the plate.

Quinn Murphy, “the best hitter on the team” according to Scandura, will be in center field to complete the impressive middle of the field for Barrington. The 23rd-rated 2024 outfielder in New England is a Maine commit.

Power hitter Miles Fontaine, another Maine recruit ranked fifth in the junior class in Rhode Island, will bat cleanup and be at third base for the Eagles with Nick Scandura, a 6-6 all-state basketball player headed to college at Wheaton, playing first.

Senor Grant Culton will be in left field with Owen Pfeffer, the ace on the staff of the Little League team that went to the World Series, penciled in to play outfield. Coming off an arm procedure, Pfeffer’s status on the mound is in question. Lawson is another outfielder for Barrington.

“I’ve always said you only go as far as your seniors will take you,” noted Scandura, who will have six or seven starters in their final year of high school. “All my great teams have had senior leadership.

“I’m excited for this season,” Scandura continued. “I’ve coached a lot of them since they were young. The senior class lost in the state finals in Little League and the junior/sophomore group went to the Little League World Series.”

As for this year, the Barrington head coach is optimistic that a third state title in school history can happen, the previous championships coming in Division 1 in 1964 and Division 2 in 2003.

“Finding out what young kids can step up pitching will be a key,” Scandura concluded. “And can our senior throw strikes?”
