2024 Spring Team Preview: Bishop Feehan (MA)

ATTLEBORO, Ma. - Young but talented.

That is how Erik Everton is approaching the 2024 season at Bishop Feehan, with a team battle cry this year of “All In.”

A strong nucleus up the middle is a big reason for the optimism out of Everton, who has been head coach at Bishop Feehan since 2015 after coaching three years at the JV and freshman level. Before that, Everton played for four years at West Point.

“We try to mix fundamental baseball with keeping it simple,” Everton explained. “It’s a very simplistic approach we try to use, letting the kids show off their talents.”

A pitcher who did not even throw varsity last year will lead the way on the mound this year in sophomore Brody Bumila, a left-hander getting D-I looks from the likes of Vanderbilt and Duke according to Everton. The top-rated 2026 in New England who is the fifth-ranked sophomore LHP in the country, “is the number one guy around the region” in the eyes of Everton, who said the 6-7 210-pounder is throwing a fastball 94-95.

Shane Evans, a senior captain who played third base last year, will be behind the plate this season. The 21st-rated 2024 catcher in New England, a UMass Lowell commit, has big shoes to fill after the graduation of CCL Player of the Year Ian Moser, who hit .459 in 2023.

Sophomore Owen Mordas will return to shortstop with junior Randen May, who scored 19 runs as a 10th grader, back at second base.

“He’s the only freshman I’ve ever started here,” Everton said of the left-handed hitting Mordas. “He started at shortstop last year and never left. Some plays he made we’ve never seen before.”

Junior center fielder Finn McHale will be in center to bring athleticism to an outfield that also features junior speedster Ben Cote in right field.

“It all starts up the middle,” explained Everton, whose Shamrocks finished 12-10 a year ago, losing 3-1 to Bridgewater Raynham in the season finale, an outing Everton called “our best game of the year” with now graduated George Sukotas pitching a gem in defeat. “Pitching and being strong up the middle is a formula for success. We just need to get some chemistry with this group and we have a shot at that.”

Pitching depth is a key, with sophomore RHP Andrew Shute expected to form a 1-2 punch with Bumila. A trio of juniors, Ayden Mello, Pat Leonard and Bryan Kerrigan, are other pitchers for Bishop Feehan, with May throwing in relief.

Senior Ryan Eldridge, a .328 hitter last season, will see action at first base, DH and will also pitch this year. Junior Andrew Hosford and sophomore Cam Sylven are battling for time at third base with outfield depth coming from Leonard and senior Devin Ferreira.

“I like the versatility of this team,” noted Everton, who is still uncertain about who will play third base and left field from “good talent coming up” in the program. “We have a lot of interchangeable parts. The versatility is pretty high on the charts. I also like the way we’re coming together. It’s a very tight-knit group already.

“The key for us is going to be hitting,” added Everton, who is excited to be playing on a new turf field with lights, with six home night games scheduled this year. “We need to get on base and move runners around to help the pitching.”

Everton has found moving over from the Eastern Athletic Conference to the Central Catholic League after Covid to be “very challenging” to say the least.

“We haven’t cracked the title yet, but we’re hoping to this year,” concluded Everton, who points to St. Mary’s of Lynn, Bishop Stang and Bishop Fenwick as other top contenders in the CCL in 2024.
