Cooper Trinkle
Lead Scout

Our freshman class rankings have been expanded to 100 prospects as we begin the 2024 spring. This class is still very young, but we've already identified high-end talent at the top of the list, with quality depth scattered throughout. This list will grow and evolve as prospects at this age grow and develop at different rates, but for now read along to learn about the top prospects in the class, along with 'risers' within this update.

Top 5

Parker Robinson SS / Lake Central , IN / 2027

The state's top freshman prospect showed extremely well in all facets of the All-State showcase and enters the season as the starting SS at perennial 4A power, Lake Central. Robinson holds highest-level upside with a projectable, athletic, 6-foot-3, 185 pound frame. Robinson showed silky smooth actions in the infield, dancing around with quick, controlled feet, and fires the ball across with advanced arm strength to pair (87 across : '27 event-best). Robinson has the actions and athleticism (6.97 runner) to stick at short in the long-run. The long-levered, right-handed hitter holds power potential within a smooth, upward stroke, and he flashes bat strength (93.1 peak EV). The frame still has room to pack on strength, and there is five tool upside to dream on. The movement patterns are fluid and athletic, and Robinson also hopped on the bump to show a low-to-mid 80s fastball with casual intent at the All-State.

Drake McClurg OF / Center Grove, IN / 2027

McClurg is a special athlete and the only committed player in the freshman class (Indiana). McClurg stands at 5-foot-11, 160 pounds and is the best overall athlete in the class at the moment, a three-sport varsity athlete as a freshman that turned in a 6.59 60 time. The athleticism translates to the box as the switch-hitter shows quick, twitchy bat speed, with the left-handed swing showing more impact than the right at this time. McClurg reached a peak exit velocity of 92.4 mph and has the potential to grow into gap power as he matures. His feet are a weapon on the basepaths and in centerfield, where the Indiana recruit showed above average arm strength (85 OF Velo). Arguably the best in-game player in the class, McClurg's athleticism and confidence are well-beyond his peers and he checks in at #2 on this list.

Jaylen Wells-Henderson RHP / New Albany , IN / 2027

The top-ranked arm in the class provided a high upside look at the All-State, flooding the zone with a future-starter's mix. The long-levered, athletic, 6-foot-3, 175 pound frame is one to dream on and Jaylen showed his athleticism by turning in a 6.89 60 time. The arm works with an easy-effort whip to a 3/4 release point, and he sat 83-85, touching 86 mph on his best bullet. The frame + athleticism & arm action makes it easy to project the fastball velocity to reach 90 mph sooner rather than later. Wells-Henderson showed a short slider at 77-78 mph, along with a curveball at 68-72 mph with depth, and he 'pulled-the-string' on a 73-75 mph changeup that was executed down in the zone and thrown with fastball arm speed. The ceiling is uncapped for this young arm and should be an exciting follow over the next four years.

Grady Nelson 1B / Warsaw Community, IN / 2027

One of the most exciting freshman prospects in Indiana, Nelson is a national-level name to know with superstar potential. Holding a run-producer's profile, standing at 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, Nelson creates easy bat speed with special bat strength in a simple, left-handed stroke. The swing is repeatable and his lower half works efficiently to allow for high exit velocities (96.2 mph) with low effort, a trait of a future-power bat. Nelson is not just a power bat, his swing works to the inside part of the ball and his barrel accuracy also stands out, and he also moves extremely well (7.16 60) for having such a physical frame. Nelson will be a high level prospect when recruiters shift their focus to 2027 grads, and his frame + bat strength + athleticism is a special combination.

Gavin Markus RHP / Greenfield Central, IN / 2027

Another top-ranked arm in the freshman class, Markus is one of our favorite arms in the class with pristine natural arm action and a frame that projects. Looking the part of a future-starter, Markus is a twitchy mover with athleticism in his 6-foot-2, 160 pound frame and a fastball reaching into the mid-80s. Markus has ample room for added strength, which will allow the fastball velocity to sky-rocket, and his arm works quick and freely to a 3/4 arm angle. Markus spins one of the best breaking balls in the class, a tight, 72-73 mph curveball that shows two-plane shape. He rounds out his three-pitch mix with a 75-77 mph changeup. There is a lot to dream on with Markus - an athletic, projectable, strike-thrower with natural feel for spin.

Risers in the Top 10

Liam Delp SS / Mooresville , IN / 2027

A quick-footed, middle of the diamond defender - Delp turned in one of the better run times for the class, a 6.89 60, before showcasing prisitine actions on the defensive side of the ball at the All-State event. Delp's footwork in the infield is outstanding, and he has soft hands and elite body control to match. His arm is a solid tool (85 across), and Delp showed a tablesetter's profile at the dish. His swing is short, with quick, twitchy hands, and the swing is geared towards line drive contact. One of the premier freshman athletes that we have identified, Delp owns some of the most impactful feet in the class and there is all-kinds of twitch in the 5-foot-10, 155 pounder's frame.

Mason Gomez RHP / Franklin Community High School, IN / 2027

Gomez is a future-power arm to dream on, holding an ultra-projectable, 6-foot-4, 175 pound frame. The fastball shows carry properties (17" IVB avg) at 83-85 mph, a number that should steadily improve as he adds strength. Gomez shows a tight, 70-71 mph slider with late sweep, along with a straight change at 74-77 mph. There is minimal effort in the operation with the arm accelerating to a high, over-the-top arm slot and the lower half working with controlled intent. Gomez owns some of the highest upside of any arm in the class and his 6'4" frame + carry fastball creates an exciting follow.

Griffin Snider RHP / Noblesville High School, IN / 2027

Snider is an upside follow and one of the most talented arms we have identified in the 2027 class. An athletic, projectable, 6-foot-3, 180 pounder - Snider shows off a fast arm that works with quickness to a 3/4 arm slot, and a simple, cross-strided delivery. His fastball worked at 85-86, touching 87 mph, and shows sinker properties. Snider paired his sinking fastball with a tightly-spun (2500), 71-72 mph slider with some late bite. The slider looks the part of a future-out pitch and he also showed a firmer splitter at 80-81 mph. Snider is ultra-projectable and has the frame and stuff to be a high-level follow in the freshman class.

Isaiah Snavely SS / Fort Wayne Snider, IN / 2027

Snavely is an exciting young shortstop with a valuable profile as an athletic, left-handed hitting shortstop. The 6-foot, 170 pounder has one of the purest swings in the class - using a slow-controlled tempo and holding a coiled back hip into heel strike. This allows for a well-sequenced swing, and the bat whips through the hitting zone with effortless intent. The left-handed hitting shortstop turned in a solid run time for the class (7.07) and also showed above average arm strength, with infield actions that suggest he could be a long-term SS. Snavely rises to #10 in this update and will be a priority follow within the freshman class.
