Pitcher Showcase and Analysis

We would like to thank all who participated in PBR Massachusetts' Pitcher Showcase and Analysis. This was a great opportunity for 2015, '16, '17 and '18 prospects to be put on college radars. Many players impressed during their individual workouts at the showcase. Below we have the complete statistical results from the event as well as the top performers across various different categories.

In the coming weeks, we will be adding and updating profiles for each of the players in attendance, including complete analysis and video.

We also broke down the top performers using 15 commonly used criteria for analyzing prospects as seen here.

As the season approaches quickly, the pitchers are gearing up to have a big year on the bump. A couple arms, in particular are heating up fast. Here is a short list of four guys who have put their stuff together as the prepare for a huge year. Below the list of four we take a look at some of the other top pitching prospects in particular classes.

Four of the top arms on display

Sam McCarthy, RHP, Nashua North, 2016
Scouting Report: Big and long right-handed pitcher who has a ton of potential. Sits in the mid-80s right now with downhill plane and throws strikes. The breaking ball is a plus pitch and sits 72-73 with good depth and is a swing and miss pitch. The changeup is a work in progress as he continues to tweak the pitch and make adjustments. His delivery has a little too much rotation in it, but has gotten more linear in the past couple months. Big time prospect for me.

Matt Tabor, RHP, Milton Academy, 2017
Scouting Report: Loose and fast arm, out of a ¾ slot. Wiry and lanky build, needs to put on some weight as he ages. Fastball has life and was 81-83, pounded the strike zone. The changeup is a split grip changeup and it touched 74-75, showed good rotation and command of it. The breaking ball was the best of the bunch, up to 76 and tight with leverage, outstanding pitch. Has a ton of potential, please keep and eye on this guy cause he has a chance to be the real deal on the mound.

Josh Garber, RHP, Lawrence Academy, 2016
Scouting Report: Low-¾ right-hander who has a quality three-pitch mix; fastball, slurve and a changeup. The fastball is a mid-80s fastball with a ton of movement arm-side to it. The breaking pitch is really good when he gets it our front as it crosses two planes, 71-73.  In time, the spin could be an out pitch. The changeup is a bit hard but has good plane to it as he continues to improve it. Delivery is simple and on time, he has a good feel for his body and throwing strikes.

Ryan Ahern, LHP, Notre Dame West Haven, 2016
Scouting Report: At 6-foot-4, 240 pounds this big left-hander will certainly turn some heads this spring and coming years. Has an advance feel for his delivery and has a good feel for his secondary pitches. The fastball was in the upper-70s as this is the first time he threw from 60 feet all winter. The breaking ball shape was excellent and small, he threw it for strikes and moved it around. Should be an advanced pitch in a year. The changeup had fade and rotation to it, really like his feel.  Left-hander with huge leverage on the ball, repeats his delivery and has good secondary stuff, certainly a great deal to like.

Class of 2015

Ken McLean, LHP, Westfield, 2015
Scouting Report: Clean and high-¾ fast arm swing. Serious downhill plane and life to his fastball. The pitch has leverage and sat in the low-80s. The breaking ball 66-68 and was a tick too big but the shape of the pitch is good. With some more fastball to the pitch, he could have an out pitch at some point. The changeup is a plus pitch, serious depth and arm speed to the pitch. Will be an above average pitch at the next level. The pitch spits out like a fastball and has fade and depth to it at 71-72. Has a serious chance to be good.

Class of 2016

Colby Lewis, RHP, Xaverian Brothers, 2016
Scouting Report: Short, quick armed right-hander with a ton of command and sink to his pitches. Pitched in the low-80s with his fastball and had a ton of sink to it. The changeup is above average as it shows rotation and fade, sat at 74-75. The slurve was a good pitch and had the right shape to it, could be tightened for a bit more velocity as it sat at 71-72. The delivery is simple and compact, not too many red flags with this guy.

Jared Borneman, RHP, North Middlesex, 2016
Scouting Report: Short and stocky right-handed pitcher who has quality stuff across the board. Pitched with his fastball at 80 mph and moves it around to both sides of the plate very well. The slider is short and sharp, at 73 mph. The changeup is a good pitch for me, 74-75 with good depth and command of it. He repeats a simple delivery and is really good when he stays within his delivery. A good athlete that could be a quality reliever at the next level.

Brandon Jewer, RHP, Billerica Memorial, 2016
Scouting Report: Big and lanky right-handed pitcher who pitches from a high-¾ slot. He has a good downhill plane to a low-80s fastball. The fastball his life and run to it. The breaking ball sat at 68 and has good shape and leverage to it. The pitch could develop into a high level spin pitch. The changeup is very good at times and as he progresses with his delivery you will see the pitch improve. The frame could use some pounds but he moves well and should fill out nicely. Good looking prospect.

Matt Romano, RHP, Lowell, 2016
Scouting Report: Right-handed pitcher with good arm speed. He has long arms and repeats a deliberate and rock back type delivery. The fastball sat in the upper-70s and the ball looks to come out of his hand better than that. Throws a split grip changeup and he has a feel for the pitch at 74. The breaking ball needs to come on as it is big and slurvy at 71. As he matures physically I can see a jump in velocity and the frame should add weight.

Matthew Landers, LHP,  Littleton, 2016
Scouting Report: Loose and long armed left-handed pitcher, who has a fast twitch delivery. The bottom half of his body is thick and well built, the arms are long and he controls his tempo nicely. The fastball had run and boar to it, sitting at 77. The breaking ball was big and windy at 63, he wraps his wrist on the backside, he needs more arm speed to that pitch for it to become effective. The changeup 67-68 and its a circle changeup, no real feel to the pitch yet but he seems to have the right idea with his hand path. Nice looking arm

Domenic Nardone, LHP,  Noble and Greenough, 2016
Scouting Report: Fast twitch left-handed pitcher with a good amount of potential. Throws from a ¾ slot and has good arm speed. The fastball got up to 79 but you can tell his arm is much faster than that, he is a mid-80s guy easy. The breaking ball could be plus with a bit of tightening, sits at 68 now and is a bit windy. The changeup has plus action to it, 72-74, could be an out pitch as he matures. I see this guy as a reliever at the next level and with a bump in velo, he could be a serious reliever. He has a bit too much rotation in his delivery and could be more linear toe tap into that.

Daniel Pingeton, RHP, Wachusett Regional, 2016
Scouting Report: Big and physical right-hander who has a short arm path on the backside. The fastball was up to 76 and had some downward plane to it as he raises his slot through his delivery. The breaking ball was up to 67 and he pulls very hard with the front side to get the ball to spin. The changeup was 69-71 and had decent action to it. Repeated his delivery and threw strikes, he is going to have to minimize the effort in his delivery to make a jump in velo. The slot jumps up relatively high cause he tends to overthrow. The ball comes out nicely on flat ground.

James Mello, RHP, BMC Durfee, 2016
Scouting Report: Free and easy right-handed pitcher with a good and durable frame to his body. The arm works nicely out of a ¾ slot. Fastball was up to 76 and there is more to come. The changeup was his best secondary pitch as he showed good feel for the minus pitch at 70. The pitch has action and depth to it. The breaking ball is wide and sat at 62, he needs more fastball to the pitch and should probably consider a cutter or slider with his arm path. I would like to see this guy again in a year when he is bigger and pitches confidently. There are some things to like.

Class of 2017

Joe Simeone, RHP, Groton-Dunstable, 2017
Scouting Report: Ultra fast right-handed pitcher, touched 86 and has more in there. Fastball is explosive and has arm-side run to it. The command needs to come a bit, but you have to recognize the raw potential. The breaking ball and slider both sat in the mid to upper-60s. The spin pitches need a bit more arm speed to them. The changeup is a bit hard at 79 but the ball spins the right way. Huge amount to potential, the delivery needs to be cleaned up and tightened as he has a great deal of effort in his delivery. The arm is real!

Frank DiOrio, LHP, Beverly, 2017
Scouting Report: Clean arm swing with a good feel to his delivery. ¾ slot with a nice short path on the back half. Fastball sat in the mid-70s with good action and run. Spin pitch is above average at 66-67 and should be an out pitch at the level. Changeup was 71-72 with good action and depth to it, he throws it with the same arm speed.

James Kilzer, RHP, BBN, 2017
Scouting Report: Clean and fluid delivery, with a long and lanky frame. Has good rhythm to his delivery and repeats it well. Fastball has good plane to it, touched 76. The slider is a bit wide but he did throw a small one at 72. The changeup is 70-72 and relatively straight. I like his arm swing and how the ball comes out of his hand. With some strength, he could be a guy down the road

Jack Walsh, LHP, Georgetown Middle High School, 2017
Scouting Report: Left-handed pitcher, high-¾ slot with a linear delivery. Fastball sits 68-69 and has some arm side run to it. The breaking ball is big and comes in there at 64-66, the shape of the pitch is good. The changeup is 64-65, relatively straight as he slows his hand down a great deal on the pitch. The delivery needs some cleaning, the front side needs to be used and the bottom half opens a tick to soon.

Michael Nardone, LHP, Weston, 2017
Scouting Report: Short and wiry right-handed pitcher with a fastball in the upper-60s. The breaking ball is a work in progress at 56 and he slows his down on it. The changeup touched 65 and had decent spin to it. He had a slow and deliberate delivery, and he repeated it. Needs strength and maturation

Class of 2018

Drew Courtwright, RHP, Algonquin Regional, 2018
Scouting Report: Second time seeing Drew, ¾ arm slot with a short arm path on the backside. Pitched 68-70 with good command and a feel for the strike zone. Breaking ball has a nice shape to it at 62 and he locates it in the zone. The changeup is 60 and has the makings of the correct spin. Simple delivery with a lift and go, should be a guy to watch evolve in the next couple years.

Luke Gustavson, LHP, Ashland, 2018
Scouting Report: Projectable left-handed arm with a direct delivery and a clean arm path. Pitched 69-70 with good control and the movement on his fastball is genuine. Changeup is a good pitch, as he already has feel for it at 60-61, it spins the right away and has action to it. The breaking pitch has the right shape and spin. Good looking athlete who repeated his delivery the whole time and certainly became a guy to follow.
