Jacksonville High School Senior Spotlights

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

Jacksonville High Schools seniors have had a great run in their three year run in the starting line up for the Red Devils. Advancing in the State Tournament two out of three years in the starting line up. As juniors they lost in the 5A State semi-finals to defending State Champions Pulaski Academy.

Greg Jones, C, 6-2, 205,
Jones is a solid defender with above average blocking and receiving skills. He throws a 2.0 pop time consistently, his arm strength is better than that he needs to improve his footwork. Offensively he has gap to gap power, and stays balanced through contact. The only issue I see is he tends to get long and spins off balls on the outer third. Jones is a good student.

Ryan Mallison, MIF, 5-8, 150
He is a good athlete running a 6.9 sixty. Defensively, Mallison has soft hands and good footwork. He turns the double play with a good exchange and an average arm. Offensively he has a short compact swing from the left-side. He has shown the ability to hit the ball the other way on a consistent basis. I would like to see him use more lower half on pitches on the inner third.

Courtland McDonald, OF, 5-8, 180
McDonald is a solid athlete running a 6.84 sixty. He is a tremendous defender, getting great reads on swing planes. His arm is well above average. Offensively he has good bat speed with a short compact swing. McDonald is physically very strong and posses raw power.

Dereck St. Clair, RHP, 5-7, 150,
St.Clair competes with three pitches for strikes. His fastball is (82-85) and he locates it on both sides of the plate on a consistent basis. The curve-ball has 12/6 action and is a hammer, that he uses as his out pitch but he can throw it in any count. The change up is a solid third pitch, it doesn't have great depth but is thrown with the same arm action as the other two pitches.

James Tucker, RHP, 5-10, 180,
Tucker works off his fastball that is 83-86. He understands how to pitch in at times. Mechanically he is sound but needs to get more extension to improve his consistency and  his off-speed pitches. He throws a slider, that he consistently throws for strikes. The change up has good depth but he tends to cut it off.
