MO Underclass Games: Pitchers Edition

Prep Baseball Report Missouri hosted the Missouri Underclass Games showcase on June 8th at Atkins Field in Columbia.  The event was attended by prospects coming from the 2023 and 2024 classes and today we take a look at the pitchers that attended.  

Wil Libbert topped the charts on the top fastball at 90 mph from the left side with Christian Bobzin coming in at the top of the 2024 class at 87 mph.  Libbert also had the highest spinning fastball at the event at 2467 RPM with Cannon Stuckey Right behind him at 2395 RPM and Bobzin leading the way again for the 2024 class at 2363 RPM.  Ethan Ferguson had the top spinning slider at 2395 RPM at 71 mph and Logan Stewart topped the charts for the 2024's at 2150 RPM.  Kaden Peer had the highest spinning curveball at an impressive 2610 RPM at the event with Seth Benes right behind him posting an impressive 2460 RPM to go along with an event best 38 Bauer Units.

Reiss Beahan LHP / 1B / Columbia Hickman, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: 1B/LHP

Body: 6-foot-3, 170-pound long and lean frame with room for added strength and size in the future

Delivery: On the mound uses short and methodical steps and rhythm around the rubber.  Works to a very high glove front side with heavy shoulder tilt.  Slight stall out after high balance point with short push off the rubber

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with a longer arm action.

FB: 76-78 mph, good riding life through the zone with the ability to land for strikes.  Good arm side run.

CB: 62-66 mph, big shape with good spin metrics at 2265 rpm.

CH: 73-74 mph, really good hand speed with some arm side fade.

Seth Benes RHP / 3B / Liberty , MO / 2023

Positional Profile: RHP

Body: 6-foot-1, 175-pound lean and projectable frame with room for added strength and size.

Delivery: On the mound uses short and smooth rhythm around the rubber working to a mid high balance point. Hands work in sync with the lower half with a clean hand break at the top of the balance point.  Slight drift to a firm front leg with good extension down the mound.  Works form the center of the rubber and strides directionally down the center of the mound with good momentum.  

Arm Action: RH.  High ¾ arm slot with a clean arm action and good hand speed.  

FB: 86-88 mph, strong induced vertical break with some slight arm side run and strong extension with a high release height.  

CB: 62-64 mph, high spin rates (2460 RPM max) with early break and tight spin.

CH: 77 mph, fastball hand speed with short arm side fade and mostly flat depth.

Christian Bobzin RHP / SS / St. Paul Lutheran, MO / 2024

Positional Profile: RHP/SS

Body: 6-foot-3, 175-pound long and lean build with present athleticism and projectable frame.

Delivery: On the mound uses a short rocker style delivery with an up tempo pace.  Works to a high balance point with hands staying mostly quiet throughout the delivery at chest height.  Slight sink with the chest after hand break with slight shoulder tilt.  Gets good push off the rubber with good momentum headed down the slope into a firm plant.  Good hand speed and projects to continue adding velocity. as he gets stronger.

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with a clean arm action and good hand speed.

FB: 86-87 mph, above average spin rate on the fastball for class with strong arm side run and riding life through the zone.

SL: 71-73 mph, shorter cutting action with developing spin.

CB: 67 mph, bigger shape than slider with more depth and horizontal movement.

CH: 70 mph, strong straight downward fading action with the makings of a plus pitch with good hand speed.

Caden Bogenpohl OF / RHP / Jackson , MO / 2023

Positional Profile: 3B/RHP

Body: 6-foot-5, 215-pound large and mature frame with good athleticism and present strength.

Delivery: On the mound uses a rocker style footwork around the rubber working to a high balance point. Slow and methodical pace throughout the delivery.  Strong stack on the back leg with slight coil with the shoulders and hips at balance point.  Long strides down the center of the mound landing with a soft plant leg.  

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with a long and stiff arm action.

FB: 83-84 mph, mostly straight action and commands it well to the glove side.

CB: 64-67 mph, 1/7 shape with late depth and good extension.

Hunter Brickson 3B / RHP / Holt, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: 3B/RHP

Body: 6-foot-2, 200-Pound physical and mature frame with strength in the lower half.

Delivery: On the mound uses short and methodical footwork around the rubber working to a mid height balance point.  Quiet hands set at slightly above the belt with consistent hand break out of the glove at the top of the balance point.  Works from the middle of the rubber and strides directionally down the center of the mound with good momentum.  High glove front side with slight shoulder tilt.  Gets good push off the rubber with slight sink into back leg.

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with a shorter arm action.  

FB: 76-78 mph, very heavy arm side run and sink.

SL: 65 mph, 9/3 shape with good east/west action.

CH: 71-73 mph, good arm side fade with depth and fastball hand speed.

Ryan Casteel SS / RHP / Liberty, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: SS/RHP

Body: 6-foot, 160-pound lean and athletic frame with room for added strength and size in the future.

Delivery: On the mound starts from the middle of the rubber and uses short footwork to get to the first base side.  Works to a high balance point with an up tempo rhythm and pace.  Slight shoulder and hip coil at the top of the balance point.  Stalls out at the top of balance point and glides down the slope with short push off the rubber.  Lands to a firm plant leg with clean arm swing at release.   

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with a short arm action and clean release,

FB: 79-80 mph, strong tilting action with some sink and fade to the arm side.

SL: 70-71 mph, 10/4 shape with early break and developing spin.  

CH: 71 mph, good arm side fade with fastball hand speed and ability to throw it in the zone.

Max Cohen LHP / OF / Marquette , MO / 2023

Positional Profile: OF/LHP

Body: 5-foot-10, 160-pound lean and developing frame with room for added strength and size in the future.

Delivery: On the mound uses short and simple footwork around the rubber to a high balance point.  Out of the stretch shows the ability to slide step on rhythm.  Slight stall out as the plant leg works to the ground.  Slight sink into the back leg with short push off the rubber.  Athletic finish with good balance throughout the delivery.

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with a short arm action on the back end and long release.

FB: 76-78 mph, mostly flat depth with good arm side run.

CB: 63-64 mph, rolling action with 1/7 shape and a feel for spin in the zone.

CH: 70 mph, fastball hand speed with arm side fade and good sell.

Kenton Deverman LHP / OF / Fort Zumwalt West, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: OF/LHP

Body: 6-foot, 165-pound lean and developing build with wiry strength and room for more size in the future.

Delivery: On the mound uses short and simple footwork around the rubber.  Hands work up and down with the lead leg.  Slight lean towards the first base side with the body at the top of the balance point.  Gets stacked on the back leg and uses a tall and fall style down the slope.  Lands on a soft plant leg with strong rotation of the upper body after foot strike.

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with a loose arm action with slight cupping action on the back end.

FB: 77-79 mph, strong spin rates for class with riding life through the zone with very good extension down the mound.

CB: 64-66 mph, loose shape and action with developing spin and big east/west movement.

CH: 72 mph, strong arm side fade with good depth and hand speed.   Shows the ability to land it in the zone.

Ethan Ferguson C / RHP / Vianney , MO / 2023

Positional Profile: C/RHP

Body: 5-foot-9, 153-pound lean and developing frame with room for added strength and size in the future.

Delivery: On the mound works exclusively out of the stretch.  Quick pace to short balance point.  Hands break out of the glove at the top of the balance point.  Works from the first base side of the rubber and strides directionally down the center of the mound with good momentum on a soft plant leg. 

Arm Action: ¾ arm slot with a clean arm action and release.

FB: 74-76 mph, heavy arm side run with some life through the top of the zone. 

SL: 69-70 mph, short break on 9/3 shape with good hand speed.

CH: 66-67 mph, fading action to the arm side with short depth.

Colin Kerber RHP / 1B / Marquette , MO / 2023

Positional Profile: 1B/RHP

Body: 6-foot-2, 210-pound long and physical frame.

Delivery: On the mound works exclusively out of the stretch.  Works to a mid height balance point with a short weight stack on the back leg.  Hands break out and away from the body at the top of the balance point.  Slight sink into the back leg and gets good push off the rubber.  Works from the middle of the rubber and lands slightly towards the first base side of the mound.

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with a short/stiff arm action.

FB: 75-80 mph, low spin with heavy sink and arm side fade.

CH: 62-64 mph, flatter depth with heavy arm side fade.

Cole Kreisel SS / 2B / Warrensburg , MO / 2024

Positional Profile: MIF/RHP

Body: 5-foot-9, 155-pound lean and developing frame with room for added strength and size in the future.

Delivery: On the mound uses short and methodical footwork around the rubber working to  a lower balance point.  Smooth rhythm throughout the delivery from both the windup and out of the stretch.  Works from the first base side of the rubber and strides directionally down the center of the mound into a firm plant leg.  Heavy rotation of the body off the plant leg.

Arm Action:  High ¾ arm slot with a longer and clean arm action.

FB: 72-74 mph, heavy arm side fade.

CB: 65 mph, short shape with early break with more east/west action than depth.

CH: 66 mph, good arm side fade with fastball hand speed.

Tyler Laskowski 1B / RHP / Christian Brothers College , MO / 2024

Positional Profile: 1B/RHP

Body: 6-foot, 185-pound athletic build with strength in the lower half.

Delivery: On the mound uses a short rocker style delivery working up to a short balance point.  Hands start up near the chin and break from the glove as the lead leg heads down the slope.  Slight sink into the back leg with some push off the rubber.  Very quick to the plate out of the stretch.  Smooth rhythm throughout the delivery.  Slight shoulder tilt as the hands break from the glove.

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with a quick/clean action.

FB: 72-74 mph, heavy arm side run and sinking action.

SL: 67 mph, short cutting action with developing spin.

CH: 68 mph, heavy fade to the arm side with slightly slower hand speed.

Cole Lemons C / RHP / Notre Dame, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: C/RHP

Body: 6-foot-1, 177-pound long and lean build with good projection and room for added strength and size in the future.

Delivery: On the mound uses a rocker style footwork working to a mid height balance point.  Slow and methodical rhythm with repeatable mechanics.  Hands break from the glove as the plant leg works down the slope out and away from the body.  Tall and fall style down the mound landing to a firm plant leg and good extension down the mound with the feet.

Arm Action: ¾ arm slot with a long arm action.

FB: 79-82 mph, heavy arm side run and sink with good tilt.

SL: 68-70 mph, more of a cutting action with developing spin.

Wil Libbert LHP / 1B / Blair Oaks , MO / 2023

Positional Profile: LHP

Body: 6-foot-1, 185-pound athletic and projectable frame with room for more strength and size in the future.

Delivery: On the mound uses short and simple footwork around the rubber working to a high balance point.  Smooth rhythm throughout the delivery and does a good job of repeating mechanics.  Slight bend in the back knee with good push off the rubber landing with a firm plant leg.  Works from the third base side of the rubber and strides directionally down the center of the mound with good momentum.  High glove front side and pulls it into the chest quickly.  Very sound overall mechanics.

Arm Action: LH.  High ¾ arm slot with clean arm action and good hand speed.

FB: 86-90 mph, strong tilting action and shows the ability to work it to both sides of the plate.

CB: 73 mph, bigger shape and depth than slider.  Feel for spin in the zone and good hand speed.

SL: 71-73 mph, short depth with 3/9 shape 

CH: 79 mph, good depth with heavy arm side fading action.

Gabriel McLevain C / RHP / Cooter, MO / 2024

Positional Profile: C/RHP

Body: 5-foot-11, 170-pound athletic frame with present strength and room for more in the future.

Delivery: On the mound uses short and methodical footwork around the rubber working to a low balance point.  Stays compact throughout the delivery with slight hip coil at balance point.  Slight sink into the lower half and gets good push off the rubber.  Works very quick to the plate out of the stretch. 

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with clean arm action and arm swing.

FB: 79-82 mph, slight tilt and arm side run with the ability to throw in the zone.

CB: 61-63 mph, short and early break with slightly slower hand speed.

CH: 68 mph, slight depth with some arm side fade.

Jack Meyer RHP / SS / Pacific, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: MIF/RHP

Body: 6-foot-3, 147-pound very long and lean frame with good projection and room for more strength in the future.

Delivery: On the mound works exclusively out of the stretch position.  Works to a low balance point with heavy coil in the hips at the top.  Glove tap hand break low around the belt.  Works from the far first base side of the rubber and strides slightly closed to the third base side.  Tall and fall style down the slope into a firm plant leg with heavy body rotation off the plant leg.

Arm Action: 

FB: 76-80 mph, heavy arm side run and sinking action.

SL: 65 mph, Short and early break with 1/7 shape and depth.

CH: 70-72 mph, arm side fade with fastball hand speed.

Kaden Peer SS / OF / Christian Brothers College, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: OF/RHP

Body: 6-foot-2, 174-pound lean and projectable frame with room for more strength in the future.

Delivery: On the mound uses short and simple footwork around the rubber working to a high balance point.  Gets strong weight stack on the back leg with good push off the rubber.  Smooth rhythm throughout the delivery and repeats the mechanics well.  High glove front side with the hand pulling tight into the chest.  Works from the first base side of the rubber and strides directionally down the center of the mound to a firm plant leg.  Gets good extension down the slope with the lower half.

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with a clean arm action and slight recoil on the finish.

FB: 81-85 mph, high spin with good riding life through the zone and shows the ability to work it to both sides of the plate.

CB: 70 mph, 1/7 shape with good depth and feel for spin.

Matthew Reid RHP / 1B / Saint Dominic, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: 1B/RHP

Body: 6-foot, 190-pound physical and mature frame.

Delivery: On the mound uses a rocker style footwork from the middle of the rubber working to the first base side.  Works to a mid height balance point with hands set around the belt.  Slight lean back on the back leg at balance point.  Stalls out as the front leg works down the center of the mound.  Finishes on balance and in good fielding position. 

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with a stiff arm action.

FB: 71-72 mph, mostly flat depth with strong arm side run.

CB: 63-65 mph, 12/6 shape with good downward depth. 

Cooper Robertson 3B / RHP / Fort Zumwalt West, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: 3B/RHP

Body: 5-foot-10, 190-pound stocky build with present strength.

Delivery: On the mound uses short and simple footwork around the rubber working to a high balance point.  Strong weight stack onto the back leg with good leg drive and push off the rubber.  Smooth rhythm throughout the delivery and repeats it well.  Shows the ability to work in the slide step out of the stretch position.  Hands work up and down with the lead leg and breaks with smooth rhythm at the top of the balance point.  Finishes with heavy rotation off of a soft plant leg.

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with a clean arm action.

FB: 78-80 mph, mostly straight action with some riding life through the zone at the top of the strike zone.

SL: 72 mph, short cutting action with developing spin.

CB: 68 mph, tight 1/7 shape with late depth.

CH: 72 mph, far lower spin rate with some fading action and the ability to land in the zone.

Brendan Rodis RHP / SS / Vianney , MO / 2023

Positional Profile: RHP

Body: 5-foot-11, 175-pound athletic frame with room for added strength and size in the future.

Delivery: On the mound works exclusively out of the stretch.  Quick rhythm and pace working to a mid height balance point.  Hands work up and down with the lower half in rhythm and hands break from the glove at the top of the balance point.  Hands break out and away from the chest.  Front side glove points to the third base side with slight shoulder coil.  Works from the middle of the rubber and strides directionally down the center of the mound with good momentum.  Lands to a soft plant leg and finishes the delivery balanced and in an athletic position.

Arm Action: ¾ arm slot with a short arm action and long release.

FB: 79-81 mph, riding life through the zone with good extension at release.

CT: 72-74 mph, short action with slight cut and short depth.

CB: 63-69 mph, bigger shape with two-plane action and developing feel for spin.

Pj Rogan LHP / OF / Lafayette , MO / 2023

Positional Profile: OF

Body: 5-foot-10, 180-pound compact and athletic build.

Delivery: Legitimate arm that the throws from both the right and the left side.  On the mound uses short and simple footwork around the rubber working to a mid height balance point.  Strong weight stack onto the back leg with slight sink into the lower half with good push off the rubber.  Strides directionally down the center of the mound with good momentum headed to the plate.  Finishes on balance and in an athletic position.  Mechanics match up on both arms very impressively.

Arm Action: ¾ arm slot with a clean arm action and good hand speed.

FB: 78-80 mph, riding life through the zone with good spin metrics.

SL: 66 mph, short action with short  and late depth.

CH: 73 mph,  Fastball hand speed with straight shape and downward depth.

Logan Stewart SS / RHP / Home School, MO / 2024

Positional Profile: MIF/RHP

Body: 5-foot-10, 150-pound with an athletic and developing frame with room for added strength and size in the future.  

Delivery: On the mound uses a short rocker style footwork around the rubber working to a high balance point.  Smooth and up tempo rhythm that he repeats well.  Hands work up and down with the lower half breaking from the glove as the lead leg heads down the slope.  Works from the middle of the rubber and strides directionally down the center of the mound with good extension and heavy rotation off of a firm plant leg.

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with a long arm action.

FB: 77-78 mph, arm side run with strong strike throwing ability.

SL: 66 mph, short depth with some east/west action and strong spin numbers for class.

CH: 73 mph, kills the spin well and gets good depth and fading action.

Cannon Stuckey C / RHP / Lafayette, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: C/RHP

Body: 6-foot, 205-pound physical and sturdy frame with current strength.

Delivery: On the mound uses a short rocker style footwork around the rubber working to a mid height balance point.  Strong weight stack onto the back leg with a tall and fall style delivery down the slope.  Gets good extension down the mound with longer stride.  Stays coiled on the balance point for a long time allowing the hand to quickly whip through the zone.  Well put together delivery with good balance and athleticism.

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with clean arm action and good hand speed.

FB: 85-87 mph, good tilting action with mostly straight shape.

SL: 75-76 mph, Tight spin with good east/west shape and late depth.  Good hand speed and attack.

CH: 79 mph, Straight downward depth with short arm side fade.

Tyler Whitworth 1B / RHP / Hazelwood West, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: 1B/RHP

Body: 6-foot-4, 190-pound long and projectable build with room for added strength to the frame in the future.

Delivery: On the mound uses short and simple footwork around the rubber.  Quick pivot with the back foot with a smooth and methodical rhythm.  Works to a mid height balance point with hands breaking from the glove at the top of the balance point.  Gets good extension down the slope with a longer stride and slight push off the rubber.  Does a good job of repeating the mechanics with smooth rhythm.

Arm Action: High ¾ arm slot with a short arm action.  

FB: 79-81 mph, mostly straight action with some slight sink at times.

SL: 74 mph, slurvy shape with solid spin.

CH: 73 mph, strong fading action with less spin.
