2013 Underclass Spotlight: RHP Steven Duby, Jr (Maumee)

The saying goes, “All it takes is one good day.”

For Maumee’s Steven Duby, Jr, that one day could be his performance on January 28th at PBR’s Pre-Season Underclass in Kettering, Ohio.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed pitcher made the three plus hour drive down from Maumee (a suburb located outside of Toledo).

When he stepped on to the warm up mound, the sound of the catcher’s glove changed.

Eventually, the talented righty made his way to the live mound where he proceeded to register a consistent 88 mph fastball that eventually sat between 87-89 mph.

Reflecting on his velocity, Duby notes “I have mostly been consistent at 89 mph, but I have hit 90 mph during a bullpen for my high school.”

While Duby shows Division I velocity, he doesn’t rely on arm strength alone.

He displays command of three off-speed pitches, including a 77-78 mph curveball, 79-81 mph slider, and a 75 mph changeup.

Duby says, “My slider is my go to off-speed pitch. I can throw it consistently for strikes and it seems to be a good pitch to get guys out.”

Still, he notes, “My change up is the pitch that needs the most improvement. I'm still trying to develop a good change with solid movement. “

Prior to PBR’s Pre-Season Underclass Showcase, Duby attended pitching clinics at the University of Michigan and University of West Virginia, where he is scheduled to go on an unofficial visit this month.

With it being the quiet period, Division I coaches could not attend the Pre-Season Underclass Showcase, but that hasn’t stopped Duby from receiving a great deal of attention.

“Since the showcase many schools have shown interest and it has opened many opportunities for me to play at the next level.” He goes on to say, “I've been emailed or talked on the phone with multiple schools ranging from the MAC, Big 10, Big 12, ACC, and Big East since the PBR Showcase.”

Clearly, Duby is reaping the initial benefits of “one good day”.

“It was definitely a surprise to hear from the amount of coaches during this time and how many followed the showcase results. Never did I expect a showcase would help me gain this much attention.”

While the recruiting process is just starting for Duby, he is beginning to put together a list of factors that will play a role in his decision making process. He notes, “I'm looking for a school that will provide a great education and atmosphere. Distance will not play too much of a factor.”

Currently, the junior carries a 3.65 accumulative grade point average, and he is scheduled to take the ACT this spring.

In addition to his duties on the baseball field, Duby will also star as the starting quarterback for Maumee’s football team this coming fall.
