Ontario Open ID: Class of 2016 Evaluations

TOP PITCHER:
Ryan Mount, RHP, Canterbury High School
TOP POSITION PLAYERs:
Justin Emond, SS, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School & Keegan Warner, SS/2B, St. Pius X High School

Alex Guy, C, Mother Theresa High School
Scouting Report: 5-foot-8, 185-pound catcher with stocky, compact frame that can see strength gains in the future. Ran a 5.00 from home to first and a 5.86 in the 40-yard dash. Offensively, starts with weight on backside, slightly open and hands back. Leg kick to get it going, stays online with lower half, hands stay direct to ball. Likes to pull with more power to the pull side. Exit velocity was 76 mph. Defensively, good rhythm behind the plate. Transfer was clean and smooth. Arm was short from a ¾ arm slot. Pop time was 2.30 and velocity down to second was clocked at 65 mph. Showed hands have improved receiving, needs to continue to work on arm strength. Much better from when we saw Alex in October.

Brandon Gravel, OF/LHP, Westwood Senior
Scouting Report: 6-foot-3, 210-pound left-handed pitcher who hits from both sides of the plate. Strong frame with mature features. Compact with some current strength and strong lower half. On the mound, Gravel worked with some rhythm and deception to his delivery. Good timing and separated well over the rubber. Arm angle was from a high-¾ slot and filled the zone with all three of his pitches. Fastball was 73-75 mph while he showed the ability to work both sides of the plate. Curveball had 2/8 shape while he threw it for strikes at 62-64 mph. Changeup was 65-68 mph, again attacking the strike zone. Created good downward angle off the mound, can see him getting longer stride and getting more out of his body. Offensively, switch hitter with right side being  his natural side. From the right, hits from a wide stance with his legs bent. Starts open and has small stride back online. Load with hands is straight back. Bat stays on level plane for the most part to contact, with an uphill finish. Exit velocity was 87 mph from the right-side. From the left side, wide and open stance, still work in progress. Not as fluid as from the right side. Will take work with lower half, balance, and timing. Coaches say he a hard worker so chance he gets it. Exit velocity was 76 mph. 4.75 was time from home to first, 5.41 in the 40-yard dash. Defensively, approached ball well, fielded clean and had a good transfer to mix with a big crow-hop before release point. Arm plays, was online with throws from ¾ arm slot. Outfield velocity was 76 mph.

Connor Jones, C, AY Jackson HS
Scouting Report: 5-foot-11, 150-pound catcher who looks to add strength gains. Ran a 4.88 from home to first and a 5.25 in the 40-yard dash. At the plate, hits with knees bent in an even stance. Small stride with very little hand movement and load. Tends to breakdown on backside and get underneath ball. Exit velocity was 72 mph. Defensively, Jones looked agile in lower half. Transfer was low and footwork would get wide creating a tough angle to throw down to second. Pop time was 2.31 while his velocity topped out at 62 mph.

Conor MacMillan, RHP/3B, Gisele Lalonde High School
Scouting Report: 5-foot-11, 150-pound righty with athletic frame and room to add strength. Showed some arm speed from a high-¾ arm slot. Tends to open up with front side and head finishes outside front leg. Fastball was 75-77 mph with some arm side run. Changeup had some late movement down in the zone while maintaining arm speed at 69-71 mph. Curveball flashed some late bite when arm gets extended. More of an 11/5 shape to it, when missed would stay up to arm side. Athleticism is there with some arm speed. At the plate, ran a 4.84 from home to first and a 5.41 in the 40-yard dash. Nice athletic setup. Small toe tap to stride with back elbow up. Good rhythm with hands, was able to get bat head out front and create some extension. Exit velocity was 70 mph. Defensively, showed clean actions side to side. Average hands, arm was clean with nice transfer and release. Has some athleticism in lower half. Arm was clocked at 74 mph across diamond and accurate.

Daniel Maguire, 2B/MIF, AY Jackson
Scouting Report: 5-foot-10, 160-pound with average frame and room to develop. Offensively, Ran a time of 4.69 from home to first and was clocked at 5.34 in the 40-yard dash. At the plate, hits from crouched position with small stride and load. Hands tend to drop and create a long path to contact. Ability to keep hands on top more and have better path to ball will be key for Maguire. Exit velocity was 67 mph. Defensively, fielded ball in front of body, arm slot worked from a low-¾ slot at 66 mph across diamond. Footwork and hands can improve by being more relaxed and softer in his hands and elbows.

Daniel Perrier, LHP, Glebe College Institute
Scouting Report: Big 6-foot-9, 235-pound left-hander with all the size you could ask for. Worked strictly out the stretch during the bullpen session. Starts with slight hip turn with early separation, will go back into glove with the ball later in his delivery right before lower half and glove start to work towards the plate. Direction and alignment can be better, falls off hard towards third base side leaving his arm to drag at times. Can get real short with his stride. Arm works in the back and gets up to his low-¾ arm slot with average arm speed. Fastball was 79-81 mph and was able to stay around the strike zone. Curveball was more of a slurve, had good rotation and looks as though he could spin it, was 62-64 mph. Threw one that made me buckle while behind the plate. Changeup sat 70-73 mph. Big tall lefty with everything physically you could ask for. Lacks the reps up to this point but with some mechanical adjustments and a quality pitching guy, there is no telling what Perrier could turn into. Very intriguing.

David Castillo, LHP, Lester B Pearson
Scouting Report: 5-foot-9, 145-pound frame with some definition and strength. Worked out the full wind-up with good tempo, was able to repeat delivery. High leg kick, separation was on-time and over the rubber. Worked from a ¾ arm slot which produced lots of natural movement. Arm works in the back with average arm speed, can get a little stiff at finish. Fastball worked between 78-80 mph with nice run and sink. Changeup was 73-75 mph with same type of action as fastball. Curveball had more of a slurve shape to it, sat between 70-73 mph while best action were balls down and in on a righty. Nothing was straight, filled the zone and threw quality strikes during his bullpen.

Eric Aucoin, RHP/3B, St.Mark High School
Scouting Report: 5-foot-10, 190-pound compact frame with more strength gains remaining. Off the mound, Aucoin worked from a ¾ arm slot with some rhythm in his delivery with effort involved. Arm had some stiffness in the back, at times would be late getting arm up into proper position for launch causing him to sling. Fastball was 71-74 mph and around the zone. Changeup sat between 64-66 mph, at times would slow his arm down and try to create. Curveball was more of a slider with 10/4 shape, threw a couple that had some late break to it. Ability to get arm up with some looseness will allow Aucoin to be more consistent off the mound. Offensively, ran a 4.82 from home to first and  5.35 in the 40-yard dash. At the plate, starts with a crouched stance with wide base. Small stride with a slight arm bar on his load. Hands do a good job of working to the ball, some lift to swing. Exit velocity was 72 mph. Defensively, fielded ball cleanly and out front. Hands were average, like to see him work through some balls with his feet. Arm had some length but was clean from a ¾ arm slot. Velocity across the diamond was 72 mph.

Jake Surrett, 2B/MIF, John McCrae Secondary
Scouting Report: 5-foot-7, 145-pounds with room to develop physically. Offensively, ran a 5.00 from home to first and a 5.93 40-yard dash. At the plate, Hit from a balanced position with front side slightly open. Bat was flat on back shoulder, small toe tap to stride. Hands are loose and relaxed with some bat waggle. On load hands tend to drop. Head stays quiet and on ball, hands get out-front and hit a few line drives during batting practice. Exit velocity was 72 mph. Defensively, made the routine plays. Hands had average feel, transfer was clean while arm action had some length in the back, release was from a ¾ arm slot with accuracy. Was clocked at 71 mph across the diamond.

Joshua Sinnott, 1B/RHP, Ecole Secondaire
Scouting Report: 6-foot-2, 175-pounds with good size frame and some current strength and athleticism. Offensively, ran a 4.62 out the box to first base and a 5.28 40-yard dash. At the plate, hits from an open stance with hands high and some bat movement. Strides out and gets back to being online and square, hands have nice easy load back. At times can spin off ball rather than driving through with lower half. More in that body of Sinnott. Exit velocity was 77 mph. Defensively, frame fits the part as a second baseman. Made routine plays around the bag. Arm needs work as he would release from a low-¾ arm slot, was clocked at 66 mph from first base.

Justin Emond, SS, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School
Scouting Report: 6-foot, 165-pound athletic infielder with room to get more physical. Ran a 4.59 from home to first and a 5.18 in the 40-yard dash. Defensively, approached ball well with agile lower half and soft hands. Went from side to side with ease showing confident actions. Arm works and had some life at 82 mph. Good looking infielder with a strong glove and footwork. At the plate, Emond showed some bat speed during batting practice. Starts with a narrow, closed stance with big stride and minimal hand movement. Creates timing and balance issues. Hands show they have some quickness and can still get the bat through. Nice looking prospect, needs to make some mechanical adjustments at the plate but if he does will turn himself into a guy. Exit velocity was 76 mph. Defensively, live lower body with soft hands. Showed good body control and had feel for the baseball. Arm was short and proper actions with a quick, clean release. Top velocity across the diamond on the day at 82 mph. Arm was loose and quick.  Nice defensive player with a lot of upside. Good looking athlete.

Keegan Warner, SS/2B, St. Pius X High School
Scouting Report: 5-foot-11, 180-pounds. Has put on size and strength since last seen him in October 2014. Ran a 4.69 out the box to first and a 5.35 in the 40-yard dash. At the plate, hits from a crouched, athletic position with a small leg kick and nice easy load with hands. Bat path works down to ball while staying balanced and online. Gets hands through nicely with a quick, uphill finish. Projects to be a line drive, gap type hitter. Showed some bat speed during his batting practice round. Exit velocity was 83 mph. Defensively, showed good feel with the glove, moved well with an agile and strong lower half. Arm was quick with some life to his throws. Was 80 mph across the diamond. Ate the ball up and worked well to both arm and glove side. Showed athleticism, could profile as a solid second baseman with a quality left-handed stick at the next level.

Keenan Fox, OF, St. Fellowes High School
Scouting Report: 6-foot, 160-pound lefty with average frame. Off the rubber, uses a slow tempo to separation, arm is clean in the back and gets up to his ¾ arm slot. At times elbow will get low and force him to work uphill. Fastball was 68-71 mph, more in the tank with the ability to get out and finish more and incorporate backside. Curveball was 60-63 mph, tends to cut off and not finish, changeup showed feel and worked in the zone at 63-66 mph. Few adjustments with lower half and finish should see Fox velocity and actions increase. Offensively, ran a 4.84 from home to first and a 5.10 in the 40-yard sprint. At the plate, Fox starts with an open stance with a small leg kick to stride. Hands tend to wrap and roll, not allowing him to stay through the middle and get good extension. Bat path slight downhill with an uphill finish. Exit velocity was 70 mph. Defensively, showed athletic lower half and good body control. Arm was clean and clocked at 78 mph with good rotation, throws were online with clean hops. Good actions from the outfield.

Kyle Mathieu, 2B/RHP, Fellowes High School
Scouting Report: 5-foot-8, 165-pound 2017 with small frame and the chance to add strength. On the mound, Mathieu worked with an easy tempo into balance point with clean separation. Arm was short in the back with a down up action into a ¾ arm slot. Some effort involved, more arm strength than quickness. Tendency to miss arm side with fastball, was between 69-71 mph. Breaking ball was 60-62 mph, was best when he was able to get out front and extended, had 11/5 shape. Changeup was 65-69 mph, did good job of keeping arm speed. Offensively, ran a 5.21 from home to first and a 5.75 40-yard dash. At the plate, hits from a narrow stance with slight knee bend, small stride and little hitch with load. Exit velocity was 74 mph. Defensively, sat back on a few balls, need to see more action in the lower half and attack a little more. Arm action was from a ¾ slot and was clocked at 70 mph across the field.

Matthew Griffiths, RHP, John McCrae Secondary
Scouting Report: 6-foot, 170-pound right-hander with average frame. Arm was long and loose in the back and gets to a low-¾ arm slot that hinders his ability to be consistently down in the zone. Fastball was 70-72 mph and would get tailing action when he was out-front and on top. Curveball was at 60-64 mph and had 10/4 shape to it, would get around ball and fight arm slot. Changeup was best pitch and had most feel to it at 65-66 mph. Being able to consistently find his arm angle and release point, while getting on top in the back of his arm action will pay the most dividends for Griffiths.

Michael Nevins, C/2B, Nepean High School
Scouting Report: 5-foot-11, 150-pound with room to fill out and gain added strength. Offensively, ran a time of 5.04 down to first while his 40-yard dash time was 5.81. A the plate, Nevins hit from an open stance with a small stride to gt back online. Hands start up with small to no load. Controlled bat and barrel well. Was able to get the head out on a number of pitches while staying up the middle with line drives. Added strength will be a big asset for Nevins. Exit velocity was 64 mph. Defensively, Nevins pop time was 2.47 while his velocity was 63 mph from behind the plate. Arm action tends to get a little long, being able to shorten up and speed up his feet will help Nevins improve on his times.

Roan Allen, 2B/OF, Ashbury College
Scouting Report: 5-foot-11, 160-pound medium frame. Ran a 4.69 from home to first and a 5.16 in the 40-yard dash with regular effort. At the plate, Hit from a crouched stance with front side slightly open. Hands were up with some bat movement. Regular stride back online, at time would be more of a toe tap, small load straight back with hands and good bat path to ball. Sprayed the ball during his round. Exit velocity of 72 mph. Defensively, moved well in his lower half. At times would let the ball get a little deep. Arm action was clean from a ¾ arm slot. Transfer works and was clocked at 70 mph across the diamond. Hands showed some feel and was accurate with his throws.

Robert Cosenzo, RHP, Longfields Davidson Heights
Scouting Report: 5-foot-9, 190-pound righty with compact build. Works out the full with a slow tempo, drop and drive guy with lower half. Can involve legs more. Does good job of hiding the ball, pick up release point late into ¾ arm slot. Fastball was clocked at 70-71 mph, worked the strike zone and was consistent with delivery. Changeup was firm at 67-69 mph, needs to create more of a separation between that and his fastball. Curveball is where Cosenzo showed the most feel. Had good 11/5 shape with some late downward action to it. Was consistently 66-68 mph with the curveball.

Ryan Mount, RHP, Canterbury High School
Scouting Report: 6-foot-3, 190-pound with athletic frame and some strength in lower. Physical gains remain and easy to see Mount getting more physical in the future. Worked out the full with some hip turn in delivery. Easy tempo with more intensity after separation with some effort involved. Arm action is short and into a low-¾ arm slot. Was able to repeat delivery and stayed online with finish. Showed some arm speed and quickness, fastball was 80-82 mph with some sinking action. Moved ball around zone and was able to work the lower half. Changeup was 76-77 mph and kept it low while maintaining arm speed. Breaking ball had some bite, potential to turn into slider with arm slot and compliment his fastball that has some sink. Curveball was 64-67 mph. Good foundation with some arm speed and repeatable delivery, look to see where he is at this summer.

Sean Seeley, 1B/RHP, Mother Teresa High School
Scouting Report: 5-10,165-pound two player with room to add strength to frame. Off the mound, Seeley used a slow tempo throughout his delivery, not much lower half involved and a short stride. Arm path was clean into a low-¾ arm slot. Fastball worked at 65-66 mph while being around the zone. Changeup was 60-62 mph with some movement when down. Throws a splitter at 60-62 mph, needed to get out-front more and really focusing on burying the pitch to create that tumble action. Offensively, ran a 5.28 from home to first and a 5.69 in his 40-yard dash. At the plate, Seeley starts in an athletic, balanced position with front side slightly open. Small toe turn with minimal stride. Bat and hands have small load, backside tends to drop and get underneath ball with and uphill plane. Hands show some looseness, exit velocity 76 mph. Defensively, Seeley made the plays at first going across the diamond to third and turning the double play. Fielded the ball in middle of body while his arm path was clean. He was clocked at 65 mph across the infield.

Simon Guthrie, OF/RHP, PDCI
Scouting Report: 5-foot-10, 155-pound athletic frame with room to add size and strength. Offensively, ran a 4.60 form home to first and a 4.91 in the 40-yard dash. At the plate, Guthrie starts with both feet pointed in with a narrow stance. Hands are relaxed and start low, then have a big load up and back to trigger position. Slight stop and hesitation before he begins swing. Small stride, stays balanced, needs to incorporate more rhythm into swing. Exit velocity was 72 mph. Defensively, showed some athleticism and moved well side to side. Arm was short with some quickness. Was clocked at 78 mph from the outfield. Ability to stay online and get out front will help with accuracy and tailing action.

Stephen Krauthaker, LHP/OF, St. Paul & 39's High School
Scouting Report: 6-foot-2, 130-pound lefty with long legs and arms. Projectable pitchers body. Easy delivery to balance point, arm gets up quick into low-¾ arm slot, drop and drive guy with lower half. Fights himself at times to get out front and over front knee. Fastball was 66-68 mph, Curveball was 64-65 mph while changeup worked in the same area at 64-65 mph. Small adjustments and added strength gains will help Krauthaker and his stuff on the mound. Offensively, ran a 4.88 from home to first while his 40-yard dash time was 5.53. At the plate, Krauthaker hit from a crouched position with a small stride to load. Minimal to no load with hands, needs to generate more from backside and lower half. Exit velocity was 67 mph. Defensively, fielded ball out front, legs and footwork at times got a little ahead of arm. Worked from a low-¾ arm slot in the outfield and was clocked at 67 mph.

Tanner Schroeder, 2B/OF, Osgoode Township High School
Scouting Report: 5-foot-10, 170-pounds, good frame with room to add more strength. Ran a 4.66 from home to first and  5.31 40-yard dash. Offensively, hits from wide stance with minimal to no stride. Hands are relaxed, smooth load, bat stays flat through zone. Line drive stroke, exit velocity was 78 mph. Defensively,  approached the ball online, like to see him more aggressive and incorporate lower half into fielding and his throws across the diamond. Would release from a low-¾ arm slot that created some tailing action. Best throw was 69 mph on the radar gun.

Troy Clarke, C/3B, Canterbury High School
Scouting Report: 6-foot, 175-pound with projectable body type to add size and muscle. Ran a time of 5.03 from home to first and 5.75 in the 40-yard dash. At the plate, Clarke starts with an open stance and rocks back with medium stride that puts him on his front foot.. Hands start back and slight arm bar comes into play. More power to pull side as he looks to pull and can get casted outside of the ball. Exit velocity was 81 mph. Defensively, Clarke had a proper setup and transfer. Showed hands worked receiving and had some agility in lower half. Best pop time was 2.00 and velocity down to second was 79 mph. Was around the bag with his throws. Good catchers frame, footwork can become quicker which will only add to Clarke’s tools.
