PEORIA, IL – The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes rode the right arm of senior workhorse Louis Niemerg, who fired a six-hit complete game, to capture the Class 2A Third Place trophy over St. Bede Academy 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Dozer Park.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Niemerg was bringing the heat early on, sitting 85-87 mph, touching 89 mph in the first. The Maryville (MO) commit allowed one run in his complete game effort, with three strikeouts and two walks in an efficient 78 pitches.

St. Bede senior righthander Gabe Braboy scattered 13 hits in 6.1 innings, giving up four runs (three earned), with one strikeout and no walks.

The Wooden Shoes pounded out thirteen hits on offense. Leading the way was senior left fielder Brock Mette, who finished 3-for-3 with an RBI, one run scored, and a stolen base. Niemerg and junior first baseman John Kreke both had two hit days, while junior third baseman Austin Johnson added a hit and two RBI.

Sophomore right fielder Brady Booker and senior left fielder Matt Halm each went 2-for-3 for St. Bede. Senior second baseman Jack Brady plated the only Bruin run in the fifth, coaxing a bases loaded walk from Niemerg.

Teutopolis finishes the season 32-6-1, capturing the fifth state trophy since 2005 under coach Justin Fleener. The Wooden Shoes finished third in 2005 and 2013, and won back-to-back state titles in 2010 and 2011. Fleener entered the state tournament with an incredible 400-87-3 career coaching record in his 15-year career.

St. Bede Academy finishes the year 23-8. It is the third time in coach Bill Booker’s 21-year coaching career (also at LaSalle-Peru) that a Booker-led squad has finished in the final four.
