Quick Hits: Day One 2022-2023 Arizona State Games

Will Arnold
Arizona Director of Scouting

The 1st annual 2022-2023 Arizona State Games is being hosted at The Kansas City Royals Spring Training Complex. The tournament is host to some of the best teams in Arizona, among other states from the Midwest and Southwest.

Nick Arias, RHP, Tucson Champs
2022. The athletic RHP was 80-82 for a loaded Tucson Champs team. He showed the ability to throw three pitches for strike, with the best fastball control on day one of the Arizona State Games. Slurvy breaking ball came in at 68-71.

Tate McGuire, RHP, KC/Mo
2023. McGuire is an athletic RHP with long limbs and high waste to go along with an easy arm action. Fastball sat 83-85 MPH with some arm side run. Short, hard slider was clocked at 73, creating a tough look for hitters.

Addison Smith, RHP, KC/MO
 herd
2023. Athletic RHP with projectible body and an above average athlete for his age. Fastball was consistently in the strike zone, up to 84 from a ¾ slot. Slurvy breaking ball at 70-72 with depth. Smith is also a left handed hitter that created hand contact from a smooth and balanced swing. Look for this name down the road as he continues to develop.

Brandon Compton, OF, AZ Athletics
2022. Crompton has a wise base and small stride, keeping things simple for consistent hard contact. Creates above average bat speed for his age and looks the part to continue to hit against better pitching. Had a double to deep right center and a line shot.

AJ Singer, SS, T-Rex
2022. Good actions at short, with the ability to make plays in all directions. Singer has an above average arm for his age, which will give a chance to stick at SS long term. Showed the ability to drive the baseball with a double to right center, starting with a slightly open stance and small leg kick to get square.

Caleb Nieman, RHP, Scottsdale Dirtbags
2023. One of the top athletes in the Arizona State Games, Nieman will be a fun one to watch in the future. He throws with intent, sitting at 78-81 with a lively fastball to get weak contact on the ground.

Mason White, MIF, Tucson Champs
Possibly the best bat in the 2022 class, White has natural loft in his swing, helping him drive balls in the air. The left handed hitter has good rhythm and handles the ball down well. His frame projects to plenty add of strength.

Tyler Wilcox, RHP, USA Prime
2022. Compact, athletic frame with present strength. Located fastball well to his glove side at 78-81. Spun 12-6 curve ball well, with depth at 68.

Caleb Herd, C, Tucson Champs
2022 Herd is among the top catchers in the 2022 class and showed solid ability behind the plate. He is a quality receiver, turning balls into strikes working under the baseball. He picked off a baserunner at 1st base to end an inning, on a throw down and in to a lefty, showing his athleticism.
