5A Feature Game of the Week (4-23-14)

5A Feature Game of the Week

No.3 Columbine Overpowers No.1 Chatfield

The 5A #3 PBR CO Columbine Rebels looked like a team with something to prove as they took the field against longtime rival, and last of the remaining unbeaten teams in the 5A #1 Chatfield Chargers.  The Rebels (15-1) got back on track the right way after losing their first game of the season last week to Arvada West, by putting on a powerful offensive display.

The Rebels didn’t waste time getting their attack started as they put up a 5 run inning in the first off of Chatfield starter Nick Chamberlain (6 foot 1 Salt Lake CC Commit).  Chamberlain didn’t look to have his best stuff early on, as he topped out with his fastball at 82mph and left his pitches up in the zone. Sophomore Tommy Gillman took advantage of one of these pitches connecting for a 3 run homerun.  Chamberlain didn’t get much help from his defense which committed 3 fielding errors during the inning.

Chatfield looked to get on the board as they faced senior pitcher Blake Weiman (Kansas commit). The tall left hander, Weiman, looked on point, spotting up his fastball with precision, topping out at 86mph.  Weiman did a great job keeping the Chargers off balance with a nice mix of curveballs (68-71mph) and a deceptive change-up (78mph).  Weiman did make a mistake, getting tagged for a solo home run which got the Chargers on the board.

A pass ball in the bottom of the 2nd inning put the Rebels up 6-1, but an inning later, another opposite field solo shot from senior Mathew Jarecki (Benedictine College Commit), inched the Chargers back with a 6-2 score.  The Chargers continued their rally in the top of the 4th when Mason Brown, the Garden City CC commit, pounded a 2 run blast cutting the Rebel lead to 2 runs.

With the No.1 Chargers making a comeback bid, the Rebels unleashed a monster inning led by senior Tyler Mohr.  With the bases loaded, full count and 2 outs, Mohr crushed a towering ball to right field for a grand slam.  The Rebels looked to extend their lead and got it on a 2 run jack by junior Michael Tait.  When the smoke cleared the Rebels had a commanding 12-4 lead.

From there, the Rebels Weiman went to work, although he walked three batters in the 7th, Weiman eventually closed out the game with a strikeout (5k’s on the day), putting an end to the Chargers rally bid.  Weiman, though he made a few mistakes, threw a solid complete game, handing the Chargers their first loss of the season and positioning themselves nicely as they push on as a team to beat in the state playoffs.
