Prep Baseball Report

Q&A with Preseason All-State Participant: Buhm Jin Song

By Jeff Markle
Assistant State Director

Prep Baseball Report Colorado is getting ready for the start of the high school spring baseball season with the Preseason All State event on February 22nd at Slammers South.  Over the course of the next two weeks we will showcase several of the participants at this year's event.  Continuing our look is Buhm Jin Song, 2016, 6-foot-0, 145 pound, RHP from Doherty High School.

PBR:  Describe yourself as a baseball player to those who have never seen you play:

Song:  On the field, I'm a motivated and driven player who would accept any role given to me in order to help my team win in any way.  Off the field, I try to be the best teammate possible to help others get better and motivate them to go beyond the limits.

PBR:  What would be your dream school to play baseball at?  If you have already committed to play at the next level, why did you choose that particular school?:

Song:  Being from California, I would love to go back to the SoCal area to continue to play baseball and get my education. There's a couple schools I have in mind right now in that area but anywhere I can get my degree and have an opportunity to play baseball at the next level and beyond is what I'm looking for.

PBR:  What are your best assets on and off the field at this point in your high school career?:

Song:  On the field, I would say my best asset is my ability to pitch in big games to help my team win. Off the field, my best asset is motivating all of my teammates to work harder and go beyond their limits. Being an example and a leader to the younger, underclassmen guys is what I try to do best.

PBR:  What does your off-season preparation look like this year compared to you freshman year?:

Song:  Freshman year, I was focused on just basic, getting in shape activities. Running and just playing long toss to strengthen my arm. This off-season, my junior year, I'm taking things more in depth. More concentrated weight room work followed in with a lot of cardio, cross-fit type of training. Having a set schedule with bullpens and arm care days along with taking ground balls and such helps out a lot.

PBR:  What is the best baseball advice you have received and try to follow to this point in your career?:

Song:  My dad always told me "Practice like you're in a game. Make every pitch, take every ground ball, every swing like you would in a game. Then the games will seem easy because you've played it in your head already." I think this is why I go into every practice with such seriousness and intense attitude.

PBR:  What are your superstitions or routines that go on during a season?:

Song:  I'm not a very superstitious guy. I always tie my cleats with the left foot going first but I wouldn't call that superstition, just habit.

PBR:  What are your goals for:

This Season:  Return to the 5A State playoffs with my team and end with a better result than last year.

Two Years: Be pitching for a D1 team and contributing to wins and hopefully championships.

Four Years:  Be a dependable pitcher my team can count on for championships.
