Class of 2018 Games: Pitchers Analysis

Prep Baseball Report-Kansas/Missouri held the Class of 2018 Games on June 27 at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. Over 50 players took part in the event from around region.

Player profiles have been updated with video, running times, throwing velocities and profile picture.  In the days to come, we will break down the event position-by-position.  Today, we will take a look at the pitchers from the event.  Players are listed in alphabetical order.

Pitchers

Ben Buchinger C / Liberty, MO / 2018

Buchinger has a big frame at 6-foot 197-pound right handed hitting catcher and RHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 8.48 laser timed 60 and a 4.52 home-to-first. Buchinger displayed an exit velo of 84 mph, line drives to the opposite field in batting practice, simple swing, quick hands. He went 1-for-3 in game action with a single up the middle. Behind the plate, Buchinger has a positional velo of 73 mph with pop times between 2.13-2.34 seconds and mostly accurate throws. On the mound, Buchinger is a strike thrower, accelerates down the mound by driving off his backside. He has an over the top arm slot to command his fastball between 76-80 mph, a changeup with cutting action at near fastball arm speed and curveball that shows 11-to-5 gradual action.

Nicholas Chomyak 3B / Shawnee Mission Northwest, KS / 2018

Chomyak is a 5-foot-10 175 pound right-handed hitting infielder, outfielder and RHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran 7.55 laser timed 60 and a 4.76 home-to-first. His exit velo is 85 mph. At the plate, Chomyak includes a leg lift with his load, even stride, level bat path and controls his body throughout his swing. On the infield, positional velo is 81 mph with accurate throws, moved well side to side and has long arm action. In the outfield, he showed good footwork, positional velo of 83 and fairly accurate throws. On the mound, Chomyak uses an OT slot to throw fastballs that have the ability to run and cut, velo range was between 79-82, curveball showed sharp 12-to-6 action, 73-77 mph and thrown with near fastball arm speed. Chomyak utilizes a max effort delivery and accelerates down the mound with an aggressive lower half.

Talon Claussen RHP / Manhattan , KS / 2018

Claussen is a 6-foot-1 175-pound RHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. Claussen has a smooth, repeatable delivery with accelerated tempo as he drives down the mound. He shows longer arm action, ball is up out of the glove at hand break, high three quarters arm slot and throws slightly across his body which makes him more deceptive on right-handed hitters. Fastball was thrown for a high percentage of strikes between 80-83 mph with slight cutting action. Curveball was thrown with fastball arm speed, tight 11-to-5 action, 69-72 mph.

Josh Flack RHP / Shawnee Mission Northwest, KS / 2018

Flack is a 6-foot 180-pound RHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. Flack shows a smooth, fluid delivery, consistent tempo and flashes three quality pitches for strikes. Flacks fastball was consistently 85-87 mph, commanded well to both sides of the plate, flashed late action to his arm side. Curveball was sharp with 11-to-5 action, kept hitters off balance and was 69-73 mph. Changeup was thrown near fastball arm speed at 74 mph and showed good depth. Flack’s ability to control 3 pitches and repeat his delivery make him an attractive prospect in Kansas’ 2018 class.

Nathan Hungate RHP / Kapaun Mt. Carmel, KS / 2018

Hungate has a projectable frame at 6-foot-1 and 165-pounds and is a RHP and first baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.36 laser timed 60 and 4.44 home-to-first. His exit velo was 83 mph. At the plate, Hungate shows a easy and effortless swing, slightly open stance, quiet hands and singled in game action. At first base, he showed good actions with long arm arm action, positional velo of 79 mph with mostly accurate throws. On the mound, Hungate’s athletic build allows for a smooth and repeatable delivery, works consistently downhill and accelerates through his finish. He shows loose, clean arm action with a high ¾ release. Hungate is a strike thrower as he located his fastball to both sides of the plate between 80-82 mph with slight run and his curveball showed late bite, 11-to-5 action and with velo between 66-68 mph.

Trevor Jones RHP / Olathe Northwest, KS / 2018

Jones is a 6-foot-1 190 pound right-handed hitting outfielder and RHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 8.03 laser timed 60 and a 4.95 home-to-first. Exit velo was recorded at 80 mph. At the plate, Jones incorporates a toe tap in his load, in-line stride and is well balanced throughout his swing. In the outfield, Jones had proper footwork, stayed behind the baseball, had a positional velo of 80 mph with mostly accurate throws. On the mound, Jones has a smooth delivery, works slightly across his body, uses an abbreviated leg lift with good direction towards his target. fastball was thrown for a high percentage of strikes between 77-80 mph and he showed good feel for his curveball, 62-67 mph with 12-to-6 action and late bite.

Gabriel Lopez OF / Shawnee Mission South, KS / 2018

Lopez is a slender framed 6-foot-1 160-pound left-handed outfielder and pitcher in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.22 laser timed 60 and 4.34 home-to-first. At the plate, Lopez displays a slightly open stance, simple load, uses momentum of body in swing, uphill bat path, 82 mph exit velo and singled up the middle in game action. In the outfield, Lopez is aggressive towards the baseball, showed good actions, long arm action, positional velo of 76 mph with fairly accurate throws. On the mound, Lopez is deceptive with arms and legs coming at the hitter, high ¾ slot, accelerates tempo down the mound, repeats, fastball shows arm side run between 72-77 mph, changeup showed sink and fade to armside at 66-67 mph, curveball had gradual 1-to-7 action.

Dalton Mall RHP / Shawnee Mission East , KS / 2018

Mall is an athletic RHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. Mall’s delivery is smooth, repeatable and accelerates down the mound through his release. He throws from a high three quarters arm slot, with a quick, loose arm that projects. Malls heavy fastball was tough on hitters, showed run to his arm side and was between 86-88 mph, topped at 89 mph, the highest velo at the event. His changeup showed sink and run to his arm side at 79-80 mph. Mall’s slider was sharp with slurve type spin at times and mostly 11-to-5 action. Malls slender build, ability to repeat his delivery, heavy fastball and potentially wipe out slider make in an attractive prospect in Kansas’ 2018 class.

Maxwell Milligan RHP / Olathe Northwest, KS / 2018

Miligan shows a good frame at 6-foot-3 180 pounds. Milligans delivery has some effort, repeats, deceptive as he hides the ball behind his body until just before release and throws a high percentage of strikes. Milligan’s fastball was reported between 73-76 mph, changeup at 71 mph and curveball 64-69 mph with gradual 11-to-5 action. Milligan showed some pitchability in game action as he was able to effectively mix his fastball and curveball to keep hitters off balance.

Joshua Mitchell SS / Shawnee Mission Northwest, KS / 2018

Mitchell is an athletic 6-foot 175-pound infielder and RHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.41 laser timed 60 and 4.34 home-to-first. Exit velo was recorded at 97 mph, which was the top for the event. At the plate, Mitchell showed a simple and repeatable swing during batting practice with bat speed/pop and a well struck line out to CF during game action. On the infield, Mitchell displayed his athleticism with good actions, topping at 83 mph and with accurate throws. In the outfield, he was aggressive to the ball, show off a strong off topping at 86 mph with fairly accurate throws. On the mound, Mitchell repeats his delivery with a quicker tempo and loose arm. He is consistently around the strike zone with a fastball that runs to his arm side, tops at 86 mph and works between 82-85 mph. He also had good feel for his curveball between 70-74 with 11-to-5 action with late bite.

Connor Nekola OF / Mill Valley, KS / 2018

Nekola is a 6-foot 165-pound right-handed outfielder and pitcher in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.22 laser timed 60 and a 4.34 home to first. At the plate, Nekola shows an upright posture, athletic stance, simple load with hands and a toe tap, smooth swing, short stride and 85 mph exit velo. In the outfield, he showed good actions, quick arm action, positional velo of 81 mph and mostly accurate throws. On the mound, Nekola shows tempo in his delivery, accelerates down the mound, quick arm action, repeats, FB has run to arm side between 78-82 mph and thrown for a high percentage of strikes, CB showed gradual 11-to-5 bite at 65-67 mph and the changeup proved to be effective at 74-75 mph with arm side run and thrown near fastball arm speed.

Brayden Paxton 1B / Derby, KS / 2018

Paxton is a 6-foot-3 202 pound left-handed hitting first baseman and LHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.33 laser timed 60 and a 4.52 home-to-first. At the plate, Paxton displayed a 84 mph exit velo, compact stroke, athletic stance, smooth and repeatable swing, quiet hands while showing plate discipline in game action. Defensively at first base, he showed good range, accurate throws and a positional velo of 79 mphl. On the mound, Paxton shows a choppy but repeatable delivery, OT arm slot and good direction down the mound. His fastball was well located to both sides of the plate between 71-74 mph. Paxton’s curveball was 62-63 mph with gradual 12-to-6 action.

Jacob Peterson 3B / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2018

Peterson is a 6-foot-2 180-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder and RHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.34 laser timed 60 and a 4.69 home-to-first. Peterson’s exit velo was 86 mph. At the plate, he displays an open but athletic stance, simple load with hands, level bat path and a good eye for the strike zone during game action. During defensive evaluation, Peterson showed smooth actions, clean arm action, positional velo of 73 mph and very accurate throws. On the mound, Peterson is strike thrower with a steady mix of fastball between 74-77 mph and curveball between 65-66 mph. He locates the fastball to both sides of the plate which showed occasional run while the curveball showed late 12-to-6 action. Peterson has short, quick arm action, high ¾ release and accelerates down the mound.

Kade Peterson SS / Warrensburg , MO / 2018

Peterson is a 5-foot-11 165-pound left-handed hitting middle infielder and RHP in Missouri’s 2018 class. He ran a 7.54 laser timed 60 and 4.58 home-to-first. He posted an exit velo of 79 mph. At the plate, Peterson shows a slightly uphill stroke, short stride, smooth load and hit the ball to all fields during batting practice. On the infield, Peterson works through the baseball, showed a positional velo of 80 mph and very accurate throws. On the mound, Peterson showed multiple arm slots with his fastball with the velo ranging between 75-82 mph with occasional run, curveball was 66-69 mph with near fastball arm speed and his changeup was 60-64 mph.

Blake Ripp RHP / St. James Academy, KS / 2018

Ripp is a 5-foot-9 145-pound RHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. Ripp displays a smooth and repeatable delivery at a quicker tempo with some effort, hides the ball throughout his delivery. Throughout his performance Ripp showed the ability to control 3 pitches from a high three quarter release: FB 82-84 mph and topping at 85 mph, late run, changeup at 76-77 mph, thrown at fastball arm speed, arm side run and curveball at 68-71 mph, showed the ability to be sharp with 11-to-5 action. Ripp’s athletic frame and ability to consistently throw downhill make him a prospect to keep an eye out for.

Cory Roshau Jr. RHP / St James Academy, KS / 2018

Roshau has a strong athletic build at 6-foot-2 205 pounds. Roshau throws from a low three quarters slot which allows for his fastball to run armside with heavy sink at times. Fastball was consistently 79-80 mph, thrown for a high percentage of strikes and tough for right-handed hitters to pick up. He will mix in a breaking ball at 67-68 mph with 10-to-4 action, with mostly gradual bite but shows the ability to be sharp. During game action Roshau forced weak contact against the hitters he faced.

Cody Seals 3B / Ponca City, OK / 2018

Seals shows an athletic and projectable frame of 6-foot-4 180-pounds and is as RHP and infielder in Oklahoma’s 2018 class. He ran a 7.70 laser timed 60 and 4.76 home-to-first. During batting practice, Seals utilized an athletic and balanced stance, simple hand load, level bat path and had an exit velo of 86 mph. Defensively, Seals has quick arm action, works through the baseball, positional velo of 75 mph and very accurate throws. On the mound, Seals delivery is smooth, repeatable and has slight cross fire action which makes him deceptive for right-handed hitters. Seal’s fastball was recorded between 72-75 mph sligh run while his curveball between 59-61 mph, gradual 10-to-4 action and thrown for a high percentage of strikes and his changeup was at 70 mph with downward action.

Logan Steenstra SS / Liberty, MO / 2018

Steenstra is very projectable prospect with room to grow in Kansas’ 2018 class. He has a large, athletic frame at 6-foot-5 175 pounds. He ran a 7.76 laser timed 60 and a 4.63 home-to-first. Exit velocity was 85 mph. At the plate during batting practice, Steenstra shows an athletic, open stance, toe-taps, quiet hands and gets good extension through contact. During game action he doubled down the left field line. While on the infield, Steenstra showed good actions, range to both glove and arm side, loose arm action, positional velo of 75 mph and accurate throws. On the mound, Steenstra flashes a loose arm, easy delivery and works consistently downhill. fastball is heavy at 79-82 mph with late action. curveball sweeps with slurve type spin and 10-to-4 action at 68-69 mph

Andrew Sumner RHP / Mill Valley, KS / 2018

Sumner is 5-foot-8 147-pound right-handed submarine pitcher in Kansas’ 2018 class. Sumner shows a smaller but still athletic build, starts in a crouched stance, repeats delivery with fluid and loose arm action. Due to the nature of his arm slot his fastball shows run and sink to his arm side which make him deceptive and hard on right-handed hitters. Fastball is 71-75 mph and throws it for a high percentage of strikes. Sumner will mix in a slider at 65-69 mph, thrown near fastball arm speed and sweeps with 10-to-4 action. Slider was also throw for a high percentage of strikes.

Connor Thomson 3B / Olathe North, KS / 2018

Thomson is a 6-foot-2 180-pound right-handed hitting infielder and RHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.86 laser timed 60 and a 4.91 home-to-first. At the plate, Thomson has an exit velo of 87 mph, sprayed the ball in batting practice with some pop, athletic and balanced stance and slightly uphill bat path. While on the infield, Thomson showed good range, positional velo of 71 mph and mostly accurate throws. On the mound, Thomson uses and over the top arm slot and long arm action to throw fastball with occasional cut at 73-77 mph, curveball with gradual 12-to-6 action at 57-59 mph and changeups at 70-71 mph. Thomson’s delivery provides deception with arms and legs going towards the hitter and working smoothly down the mound.

Treven Veltman C / Wichita West, KS / 2018

Veltman is a 6-foot 170-pound right handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.61 laser timed 60 and a 4.50 home-to-first. During batting practice he sprayed line drives, shows a tall stance, simple load, flat barrel path and an exit velo of 85 mph. Defensively, Veltman has a quick arm and release, controls body well, positional velo of 77 mph and pop times ranged between 2.00-2.12 seconds. On the mound, Veltman has a repeatable delivery, commands both sides the plate with his fastball which showed occasional cut and was 80-82 mph. He threw his changeup at 70 mph with near fastball arm speed and showed a sharp breaking ball with 11-5 type action. Veltman showed clean arm action and works downhill.

Dylan Williams RHP / Blue Valley, KS / 2018

Williams has a projectable 6-foot-2 160-pound frame and is a RHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. Williams displayed a good feel for pitching, loose arm action, high three quarters release, quick arm action. Williams has a smooth delivery and accelerates down the mound with good direction. FB was well located to both sides of the plate between 80-82 mph while topping at 83 mph and arm side run. CH was thrown for a high percentage of strikes at 74-75 mph, showed sink and some fade, near fastball arm speed. CB showed potential to be a good pitch, 68-70 mph, 11-to-5 action.
