Kansas Underclass Games: Catchers Analysis

Prep Baseball Report Kansas held the Kansas Underclass Games at Wichita State on June 20.  Nearly 60 players from around Missouri in Kansas participated.  The players attending were in the 2019 and 2020 classes. 

Players profiles have been updated with times, velocities, videos and player profiles.  In the days to come we will break down the event position by position, taking a inside look at the catchers today. Players listed below are in alphabetical order

Catchers

Bobby Allen C / OF / Olathe Northwest, KS / 2020

Allen is a slender 5-foot-10 150-pound switch hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.56 60 and a 5.25 home to first.  He has an 86 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up, controlled leg kick, in line stride, sight arm bar, mostly pull side line drives, hit occasional middle opposite field line drive.  Behind the plate, 2.11 to 2.19-second pop times, 72 mph positional velo, sits high in catching stance, over the top release, quick exchange, squares up shoulders to throw, mostly accurate throws, throws have carry to the bag.

Connor Allen C / 3B / Wichita Collegiate, KS / 2020

Allen is a 6-foot 205-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 8.21 60 and a 80 mph positional velo. At the plate, balanced set up, reverse to tap, hands load, square stride, aggressive bat speed, flashed pull side power, some middle to opposite field contact.  Behind the plate, 2.22 to 2.57 pop times, 68 mph positional velo, quick transfer, over the top release, strong set up to receive, accurate throws to the bag.

Tobias Becker C / RHP / Rock Creek, KS / 2019

Becker iis a 6-foot-3 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.38 60 and a 4.60 home to first.  He has an 82 mph exit velo. At the plate, swing produced line drives to all fields, open stance, minimal load, short in line stride, level to through the zone.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.04 and 2.13, 71 mph positional velo, short three quarters release, fluid hands and feet, accurate throws during catching evals.

Jackson Dixon C / 3B / Park Hill South, MO / 2019

Dixon is a 5-foot-10 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.59 60 and a 4.94 home to first.  He has an 84 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, quick and aggressive bat speed, body stays under control, middle of the field approach with occasional pull side power.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.08 and 2.16-seconds, 67 mph positional velo, over the top release, quick feet with clean transfer, give low target, throws have carry to the bag, accurate.

Austin Fisher C / 3B / Tonganoxie , KS / 2019

Fisher is a 6-foot 215-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas 2019 class.  He ran a 7.97 60 and a 5.00 home to first.  He has an 85 mph exit velo. At the plate, smooth pre-swing rhythm, balanced set up, short stride, swing produced mostly pull side line drives in batting practice.  Behind the plate, 2.10 to 2.20-seconds, high three quarters release, clean transfer, strong set up for target, moves well to block, mostly accurate throws, 69 mph positional velo.

Riley Higgins C / 2B / Olathe North, KS / 2019

Higgins is a 6-foot-1 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.53 60 and a 4.78 home to first.  He has an 85 mph positional velo. At the plate, starts slightly open, smooth load into back leg, slight hand load, aggressive bat speed, level path thought the zone, loose hands, middle approach with occasional pull side line drive, repeats swing, projectable frame.  Behind the plate, 1.95 to 2.01 pop times, 71 mph positional velo, quick actions in both exchange and footwork, short over the top release, arm will drop on occasions, momentum through the catch, mostly accurate throws with carry.

Andrew Pendergast C / RHP / Blue Valley West, KS / 2020

Pendegrast is a 6-foot 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas 2020 class.  He ran a 7.71 60 and a 4.75 home to first.  He has an 81 mph exit velo. At the plate, middle to pull side line drives, flashed occasional pull power, hands are short to the ball, work inside the ball, balanced stance, loose hands, short stride.  Behind the plate, pop times 2.06 to 2.17-seconds, high three quarters release, fluid glove to hand transfer with fluid footwork, mostly accurate throws, 71 mph positional velo.

Ryan Phillis C / 2B / Wichita Northwest , KS / 2019

Phillis is a 6-foot-1 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.43 60 and a 4.87 home to first.  He has a 78 mph exit velo. At the plate, simple and smooth stroke, balanced set up, short stride with slight load, minimal hand movement, flat swing path through the zone, gap to gap approach.  Behind the plate, 2.20 to 2.28 pop times, 72 mph positional velo, quick feet, fluid exchange, over the top release, flexible behind the plate, moves well to block, accurate thrower. 

Jaron Phipps C / 3B / Nixa, MO / 2020

Phipps is a 5-foot-9 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 8.18 60 and a 5.16 home to first.  He has a 79 mph exit velo. At the plate, swing produced consistent solid contact to the middle and pull side during batting practice, smooth rhythm, loose hands, quick bat, minimal load, short stride, body under control.  Behind the plate, 2.20 to 2.28 pop times, thin stance in base to set up, high three quarters release, hands and feet on time, fluid action, mostly accurate throws, 66 mph positional velo.

Payton Smith C / 1B / Washburn Rural, KS / 2019

Smith is a strong 6-foot-1 215-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.37 60 and a 5.07 home to first.  He has a 95 mph exit velo. At the plate, aggressive and swings with effort, takes an aggressive hack, doesn’t get cheated, pull power, quick bat speed, loose hands, open stance, smooth load, accelerates to the ball.  Behind the plate, high three quarters release, aggressive momentum to throw, quick exchange, fluid footwork, 74 mph positional velo, accurate throws.

Aidan Thompson C / Olathe North, KS / 2020

Thompson is a 5-foot-11 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  Thompson ran a 7.51 60 and a 5.06 home to first.  He has an 85 mph exit velo. At the plate, squared up the ball consistently during batting practice, tall thin stance, short in line stride, repeats swing, middle to pull side line drives.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.19 and 2.39-seconds, moves well to block, quick transfer on time with fluid footwork, over the top release, momentum with back side, mostly accurate throws, 64 mph positional velo.

Spencer Whitfield C / 1B / McPherson, KS / 2020

Whitfield is a 5-foot-11 172-pound switch-hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 8.28 60 and a 5.40 home to first.  He has a 72 mph exit velo. At the plate, swing produced mostly middle of the field line drives during batting practice, wide base in stance, controlled load into back side, level path, loose hands, feel for the barrel.  Behind the plate, 2.07 to 2.18 pop times, 72 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, quick feet with on time exchange in hands, momentum through the throw, moves well behind the plate to block, mostly accurate throws with carry to the bag.
