With a 12-0 start to the season, it would be an understatement to say West Jessamine, ranked No. 4 in yesterday’s updated Power 25, has gotten off to a hot start.

Prior to leaving for a 7-game trip to Vero Beach, Florida, the Colts handed No. 14 Danville its only loss in 10 games this season and knocked off Boyle County in a 3-2 game, defeating RHP Micah Miniard, the No. 1 ranked player in Kentucky’s 2014 Class (No. 6 in the PBR overall rankings).

The Colts followed that up with a 7-0 record in Vero Beach with wins over No. 25 Christian Academy of Louisville, Greenup County, Marysville (OH), Graves County, Enderlin (ND), and a double-header sweep of Medina (OH).  In fact, the pitching was outstanding in Florida as the West Jessamine staff allowed just 6 runs in the 7 games they played.

The offense has been led to date by Trey Merida, Christian Beckley, and Jake Purkins.  Merida is hitting a robust .559 with 3 doubles, 3 triples, and 15 RBI.  Beckley bosts a .459 batting average with 1 double, 1 triple, 1 HR, and 16 RBI, while Purkins checks in at .382 with 4 doubles, 1 triple, and 9 RBI.

On the mound, Beckley, Joe Ivey, and Maxx Mahon have each posted 2 wins, and the Colts have received big contributions from Merida and Daulton Peters, as well.

For their 5-0 record for games played March 31 – April 5, the West Jessamine Colts have been selected as the Prep Baseball Report Kentucky Team of the Week.
