Q&A With Furman Commit: Bret Huebner (Cretin-Derham Hall)

Bret Huebner, SS/C, Cretin- Derham Hall, Class of 2015

PBR:  Why did you choose Furman University?

HUEBNER: I chose Furman for two main reasons: 1) I felt very relaxed on campus and knew it was the best fit for me academically and athletically. 2) The relationship I developed with the coaching staff.

PBR:  What other schools were you considering?

HUEBNER: In the end it came down to Holy Cross, Charleston Southern, Western Kentucky and Limestone.

PBR:  Where did they first see you? How did your relationship develop with the coaching staff?

HUEBNER: In a showcase tournament that was played at Furman. The tournament was put on by my summer team, the Upstate Mavericks. Our head coach was really good friends with the recruiting coordinator at Furman so he introduced me after the weekend and we exchanged phone numbers and it went from there

PBR: What role do you expect to play your first year on campus?

HUEBNER: I plan to arrive on campus in top shape, work hard and compete for a starting position.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

HUEBNER: My father by far has had the biggest impact on me. I have learned a lot about the game from him. He has really helped me with the mental aspects of baseball, taught me about hard work and how to respect the game. He has always willing to put the work in with me to help me get better. He has always been a positive influence in my life. I’m very fortunate for that.

PBR: What have you worked on/improved since last year?

HUEBNER: I’ve worked hard on my upper body and core strength along with my overall speed. Also I have worked on being more consistent with my swing and staying back on the pitch so I can get some elevation on the ball while still driving it to all parts of the field.

PBR: Who is the toughest player that you have faced in Minnesota?

HUEBNER: Carter Stoehr - East Ridge HS. I’ve played with or against him since the 7th grade. Even back then he threw hard and grinded out his at bats. Now he plays for one of our rivals. I know when we face them he’ll be one of their toughest outs.  When he is on the mound you know he’s coming hard in the strike zone with his fastball but can also mix a change in too.

PBR:  What are your thoughts on the recruiting process? Any advice for future players in your position?

HUEBNER: Overall, it was a good experience. At times it was challenging talking to the various coaches and trying to sort out everything they we telling me.  For future players, I would say have fun but choose your school on where you will feel the most comfortable at.
