Pitching dominated for both teams in a game between Apex of the SWAC conference and Sanderson of the CAP 8 conference.  PBR was on hand to watch the two clubs with high aspirations in 2017.

Sanderson’s Kevin McSoley, LHP (2018), and Jordan Blalock, RHP (2018) combined for a 1 hit shutout of Apex Thursday evening. Kevin pitched 4 innings, gave up 1 hit, struck out 3, and walked 2. Jordan came in relief in the top of the 5^th inning and over 3 innings allowed no hits or runs, struck out no one and walked no one. 

A scoreless game entering the bottom of the 7^th, Sanderson right fielder Alim McNeill (2018) led off with a line out to the shortstop – by far the hardest hit ball all evening. Centerfielder Brent Montgomery (2017) followed and was able to work a walk. With a runner on and one out, Sanderson DH, Jacob Rosenfeld (2018), lined a double down the right field line, advancing Montgomery to 3B. 

Apex turned to the bullpen in 2018 RHP Kanan Butler.  As well played and competitive as the game was throughout the evening, the finish seemed a bit anti-climatic.  With Sanderson’s left fielder, Harrison Bowles (2017) at the plate, Kanan delivered a fastball up and in that tipped off the catcher’s glove and went to the backstop.  Montgomery scored from 3B, and the Spartans flowed out of their dugout to celebrate the 1-0 victory.

In the defeat, Apex’s Tucker Jackson, RHP (2018) threw well working 6.1 innings. He gave up 3 hits, struck out 8, walked 3, and the lone run of the game was charged to him.
