NYS Games: Team Five Player Analysis

The dust has finally settled on the 2017 NYS Games. Over 230 players traveled and competed in Binghamton, NY in front of over 80 college coaches, eight professional scouts, and our entire PBR scouting staff - including the President of the National PBR brand, Sean Duncan. Team Five reports are in the books, let's take a look the player analysis reports.

Team five Reports 


Lewis Clarke, OF (2018/Saratoga Springs) Athletic 5-foot-11, 175-pound frame ran a team best 6.96/60. Offensively - uses inner knee rotation to engage hips out a nearly upright stance for an exit velocity of 87 MPH, quick hands get bat through the zone on a level path, full extension after contact, repeatable motion, comfortable driving ball to middle third. Defensively - loose and fluid movements, fundamentally sound, takes direct lines to the ball, smooth and easy transfer to throwing hand, outfield velocity of 76 MPH, intriguing blend of power and speed.


David Judge, OF (2019/Troy) Powerful 6-foot-1, 185-pound frame, ran a 7.04/60. Offensively - effective load with inner knee rotation engages hips which generate exit velocity of 94 MPH, effortless swing,repeatable stroke, drives to middle third of the field, quick to the ball, brings bat through on level path with slight upper cut with full extension after contact. Hit two homeruns during game play. Defensively - smooth and graceful, confident body language, always seems to be within his comfort zone, accurate arm at 78 MPH. High end 2019.


Ryan McGee, OF (2018/Colonie) Slender 5-foot-10, 148-pound frame, ran a 7.17/60. Offensively - initiates lower body engagement with counter rotation from upper torso, keeps bat on level path through strike zone with slight upper cut and full extension and slight upper cut after contact for an exit velocity of 84 MPH, potential exists for more power as he grows into frame, repeatable motion. Defensively - agile footwork, quick and economic movements, smooth transfer to throwing hand with an outfield velocity of 80 MPH.  


Caelan Behn, C/1B (2018/Souhegan) Sturdy 6-foot, 195-pound catcher, ran a 7.33/60. Offensively - quick to the ball with a compact swing, strong hands, effective load, inner knee rotation engages lower half, full extension with upper cut after contact for an exit velocity of 81 MPH, further counter rotation between upper and lower torso will increase power. Defensively - inconsistent release point causes inflated POP time between 2.25-2.30, refinement of basic mechanics will reap rewards, fundamentals are present.


Isaiah Logan, OF (2019/Canajoharie) 6-foot, 175-pound outfielder made an impressive debut on the PBR circuit. Offensively - heavy load included in pre-pitch movement, inner knee rotation used to generate exit velocity of 91 MPH, full extension with upper cut after contact, repeatable motion, further lower body engagement will add power. Defensively - agile footwork, confident body language, smooth transfer with a position velocity of 72 MPH.


Christian Italiano, OF (2018/CBA-Albany) Athletic 5-foot-7, 165-pound outfielder, ran a 7.42/60. Offensively - effective load, quick hands, short to the ball, keeps bat on level path through the zone, full extension after contact for an exit velocity of of 91 MPH,shows power to gaps in games, uses inner knee rotation of a nearly upright stance, further counter rotation between upper and lower torso will produce an increase in power. Defensively - fundamentally sound with some rough edges, basic footwork gets the job done, effective transfer to throwing hand for outfield velocity of 74 MPH.


Cameron Myers, MIF (2018/Guilderland) Solidly-built at 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, ran a 7.47/60. Offensively - effective load out of an upright stance, short to the ball, keeps bat on level path through the zone with full extension after contact for an exit velocity of 85 MPH, lower body engagement will produce more power. Defensively - fundamentally sound, basic footwork, sure hands, smooth transfer for a position velocity of 83 MPH. Pitching - uses to get downward plane on fastball at 80-82 MPH, positive hip tilt at the balance creates effective transfer of weight, effectively changes eye level, throws 12-to-6 curveball at 66-69 MPH for strikes, spots change-up at 72-74 MPH.


PJ Parker, 3B/RHP (2018/Voorheesville) Athletic 6-foot-3, 185-pound third baseman will plenty of upside, ran a 7.53/60 - easy to see him improving that number with time. Offensively - quick hands bring bat through the zone and gets full extension with upper cut for an exit velocity of 80 MPH, emerging inner knee rotation triggers lower body engagement, still learning the  extent of his strength, repeatable motion, makes consistent barrel contact. Defensively - calm and fluid movements, agile footwork, effortlessly transfers weight for throw across diamond at 79 MPH, short arm motion, boundless potential.


Brett Young, 3B (2018/Albany Academy) Solidly built 6-foot-1, 180-pound third baseman, ran a 7.54/60. Offensively - effective load, short, compact swing, keeps bat on level path through the zone with upper cut and full extension and exit velocity of 89 MPH - previously registered 92 MPH, evidence of inner knee rotation, lower engagement will produce increased power. Defensively - fundamentally sound with quick, agile movements, smooth transfer to throwing hand for an infield velocity of 80 MPH.


Nick Marola, MIF (2019/CBA-Albany) Athletic 6-foot, 175-pound shortstop who is already committed to UMass-Lowell, ran a 7.55/60. Defensively - soft hands with a quick trigger, infield velocity of 77 MPH does not show true picture, gets the ball across the infield in a blink of an eye, balanced footwork at all times, effortlessly changes direction, fluid motions. Offensively - short to the ball with a compact swing, effective load, emerging lower body engagement, pronounced upper cut limits barrel contact, exit velocity of 83 MPH.


Landon Fagle, C (2018/Shenendehowa) Sturdy 6-foot, 185-pound catcher, ran a 7.75/60. Offensively - effective load, short to the ball, inner knee rotation engages hips to bring weight forward,, full extension after contact for exit velocity of 77 MPH, repeatable motion, fluid swing. Defensively - fundamentally sound, sure glove, efficient footwork with quick transfer, velocity at 78 MPH with a POP time of 2.0-2.15.


David Montalvo, MIF/RHP (2018/Bethlehem) Solidly-built at 5-foot-10, 195 pounds, ran a 7.59/60. Offensively - effective load out of a nearly upright stance, quick to the ball, keeps bat on a level plane through the zone with full extension after contact for an exit velocity of 85 MPH, further engagement of lower body will produce more power. Defensively - soft hands, clean footwork, smooth transfer and 78 MPH across the diamond. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on fastball at 81-84 MPH that touched 85 MPH, late bite on slider at 76-77 MPH falls off the shelf, throws 12-to-6 curveball for strikes.


Jake Manderson, C (2019/Ballston Spa) Athletic 6-foot-1, 165-pound catcher, ran a 7.63/60. Offensively - effective load with appropriate pre-pitch movement, quick to the ball, repeatable motion, keeps bat on level path through the zone with full extension after contact for an exit velocity of 85 MPH - consistent with his personal best of 86 MPH, inner knee rotation engages hips, smooth transfer of weight. Defensively - fundamentally sound, sure glove, smooth transfer to throwing hand, pinpoint accuracy with velocity of 76 MPH and POP time ranging between 2.06-2.14. Next-level backstop to keep an eye on.


Cory Listing, OF (2018/LaSalle Institute) Athletic, 6-foot, 185-pound outfielder, ran a 7.66/ 60. Offensively - uses inner knee rotation with full extension after contact for an exit velocity of 81 MPH, strong to the pull side, heavy load, lower body engagement will produce more power. Defensively - smooth and agile footwork, sure glove, quick transfer with an outfield velocity of 79 MPH.


Derek Haughey, C (2019/Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake) Sturdy 6-foot, 195-pound catcher. Offensively - barely scratching the surface, upright stance with slight inner rotation and an exit velocity of 92 MPH, short to the ball, keep bat on level path through the zone, counter rotation between upper and lower torso will produce more power, scary to think what he is capable of in the future. Defensively - developing fundamentals, basic receiving skills are evident, still learning how to get through the entire process with the end result being an accurate throw, developing a consistent release point will be first priority velocity of 73 MPH with POP time between 2.09-2.17.


Brandan Hunt, RHP (2018/Shaker) Lean 5-foot-9, 155-pound right-hander. Pitching - fluid, clean arm action, gets downward plane on fastball at 73-74 MPH, late movement with some arm-side run, throws curveball at 62-63 MPH for strikes, improving hip tilt at balance point will add velocity.


Brandon Roberts, RHP (2018/Shenendehowa) 5-foot-11, 170-pound RHP. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on fastball at 81-83 MPH, short arm action gives perception of greater velocity, late movement, arm-side run, smooth and effortless delivery, has potential to add velocity, gets sharp downward action on change-up at 73-75 MPH, throws curveball at 72-74 MPH.


Connor Houle, LHP (2018/Waterford Halfmoon) Sturdy 5-foot-11, 175-pound left-hander. Pitching - clean arm action, positive hip tilt at the balance point initiates full extension, late action on fastball at 75-76 MPH that touches 77 MPH, potential for more as he gets a comfortable rhythm, 10-to-4 shape on curveball at 70-71 MPH.


Anthony Donato, LHP (2018/N. Pocono) Slender 5-foot-11, 140-pound right-hander with a projectable body. Pitching - loose arm action out of ¾ slot, late movement on fastball at 81-82 MPH, uses height to get downward plane, plant foot lands to third-base side of mound forcing delivery across the body, getting hips over feet will add depth and velocity, throws curveball for strikes at 73-74 MPH.


Brendan Spulnick, 1B/RHP (2018/Shenendehowa) Athletic 6-foot-4, 195-pound RHP. Offensively - out of a nearly upright stance, keeps bats on level path through the zone with full extension after contact for an exit velocity of 83 MPH, evidence of inner knee rotation but further lower body engagement will increase power, just scratching the surface with his power. Defensively - fundamentally sound, basic footwork, sure glove, accurate arm at 74 MPH. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on fastball at 81-82 MPH, clean arm action, could add power during hip tilt at balance point - hesitation stops forward momentum, throws curveball for strikes at 70-71 MPH.
