Upstate Baseball League roundup: DII Blatter stays unbeaten, Hill caps DI Graham rally and Sanchez paces DI Wiktorski

In the completion of a suspended game, Brennen Johnson (School of the Arts) connected on a two-out double and scored one out later on a Chris Sleeper (Rush-Henrietta) RBI triple as DII Sova won for the second time in three games in Upstate Baseball League action at Towers Field on the campus of the University of Rochester, Saturday. Evan Ziegelhofer (Webster Thomas) hurled three shutout innings for his first win of the season. The left-hander struck out three of the first four batters he faced and walked none. Ziegelhofer was at his best in the seventh when Bobby Sellers led the inning with a triple to right center. With the tying run 90 feet away, Ziegelhofer induced three straight ground balls including a pair of comebackers to end the game. Vince Alongi (Greece Athena) allowed one run on one hit over four innings for DII Sova. Kyle Egan (Eastridge) tossed 4.2 no-hit frames in relief for DII Maynard. The right-hander struck out four and walked one without allowing a run. DII Maynard took advantage of three walks to push across a run in the third to knot the game at one.

DI Wiktorski 9 DI Bunting 7
Andrew Sanchez (Rush-Henrietta) finished 2-for-3 with two RBI including a two-out run-scoring single in a decisive fourth inning as DI Wiktorski came from behind to snap a three-game losing streak. Sanchez plated John Faynor (Lima Christian) with a single through the left side. Jayson Faynor (Lima Christian) came home on an error to give DI Wiktorski a lead it did not surrender at 5-4. Sanchez just missed a home run in the second inning when his blast to left center caromed off the fence and brought home Jayson Faynor. Jayson Fayson struck out four and walked two over four innings for the win. Drew Delaney (Victor) worked three innings for the save. John Faynor finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Jesse Kabat (Mynderse) added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run triple in the sixth. Casey Saucke II (Greece Athena) was 2-for-3 including a single in the fourth to bring home one of his two RBI of the game to give DII Bunting a 4-2 advantage in the fourth. Jake Ring (Pittsford-Mendon) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Ring beat out an infield single in the seventh as DI Bunting brought the tying run to the plate.

DI Graham 6 DI Christiano 5
Ryan Hill (Webster Thomas) connected on a solo inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning as DI Graham erased an early deficit to win for the third time in four games. Hill’s shot into the right-center gap beat the DI Christiano outfield and capped a four-run comeback. CJ Wiest (Brockport) struck out four and walked three over three innings in relief for the win. Jordan Maher (Midlakes) hurled a shutout seventh for his first save of the season. Trailing 4-0 after two innings, Dylan Mackenzie (Canandaigua) and Wiest got DI Graham on the board with RBI hits in the third. Nick Vogt (Webster Schroeder) gave DI Graham its first lead when his hit to center bounded over the fielder for a three-run home run and a 5-4 lead. Austin Avanzato (Midlakes) and Kevin Canton (Greece Odyssey) knocked back-to-back RBI doubles to give DI Christiano a 4-0 lead in the second. Jorge Oropeza (Greece Athena) started for DI Christiano and retired the first eight batters he faced before running into trouble in the third. The right-hander needed just five pitches to retire the side in the first and 11 pitches in the second.  

DII Blatter 2 DII DiStaffen 1
Three hurlers combined on a 2-hitter as DII Blatter improved to 7-0 on the season. Korey Canton (Greece Odyssey) picked up the win. The right-hander started, struck out five, walked none and allowed one run on one hit over three frames for his first win of the season. Christian Blatter (McQuaid) tossed two scoreless innings in relief, and Gage Ziehl (Penfield) retired all six batters he faced for the two-inning save. Blatter and Ziehl both fanned three apiece. Lucas Sulimowicz (Greece Athena) tripled and scored on a Ziehl groundout to give DII Baltter a 1-0 lead in the first. Blatter singled home Ziehl in the fourth with the eventual game-winning run. Andrew Hebert (Webster Schroeder) knotted the game at one with a lead-off home run in the second. Andrew Treviso (Fairport) started and allowed one run on one hit over four innings for DII DiStaffen. Joe DellOso (Starpoint) tossed two scoreless innings in relief.
