Uncommitted Spotlight: George Cuthbert

George Cuthbert C / 1B / Richview, ON / 2019

Background: Left-handed hitting George Cuthbert of the Etobicoke Rangers, as well as the Gold Medal winning 2018 Ontario Youth team, is an intriguing backstop with size and juice from the left side. It’s a low effort swing with natural strength coming from a 6-foot-2, 198-pound frame. He displays pull-side power when he catches the ball out front, but at times will work more to opposite field. His barrel stays through the zone with control, and he does a solid job of keeping his hands inside the baseball. If he could make better use out of is lower half, he could turn himself into a consistent power threat to all fields. There’s a lot to like about Cuthbert behind the plate. With a well improved glove-to-hand transfer and arm strength, Cuthbert has flashed sub-two pop times in game this summer. His ability to block and receive have also shown well and profiles well behind the dish while controlling the running game.
