Top Stories of 2015: #4 - PIAA Announces Expansion to Six Classes

Earlier this year, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association announced a plan to expand baseball from its current four-classification system to a six-class set-up beginning with the 2017 spring season. Then, last month, the PIAA revealed a classification report with enrollment numbers that will drive in which classification each school gets slotted for the two-year cycle beginning with the 2017 season.
In a brief series of articles at the beginning of this month (see Related News below), we looked at the potential impact of the reshuffling, including perennial rivals being separated and how the PIAA might go about doling out state berths by district. Other questions still remain, such as how much deviation there will be from the current Monday-Thursday-Monday-Friday state tournament schedule, since an additional two classes will almost certainly necessitate a two-day affair to complete all six title games.
No matter how things shake out, one thing is for sure: there will be two more dogpiles starting one season from now...and dogpiles are fun.
