BASTROP, TX - The Hutto Hippos defeated The Bastrop Bears 1-0 behind a strong pitching performance from 2017 RHP Jake Doggett. Doggett, who will be attending college to play golf, was impressive on wednesday evening. He threw seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing only two hits, two walks, and striking out ten Bears’ hitters. Doggett commanded the zone with his fastball and 11-5 curveball with precision.

Neither offense could get much going as Bastrop’s starting pitcher, right-hander Frost, would also throw seven complete innings, almost matching Doggett pitch-for-pitch. But in the top of the fifth, junior shortstop Kevin Rosengren (Hutto HS) drove in the game winning run with a sac fly to right field, scoring Colee Bolding from third base. Frost, would go 1-for-3 in the leadoff spot for Bastrop, and would finish the game with seven complete innings, one run on two hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.

Bastrop would have a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, as 2-hole hitter Nutt drew a walk. After stealing second base, Nutt would move up to third base on a sacrifice base hit bunt from Vinklarek. An errant throw to first base allowed Vinklarek to be safe. With the ball rolling on the ground near first base, Nutt attempted to advance home, and tie the game. But Hutto first baseman, Colee Bolding would gun down Nutt at the plate. Doggett would retire the next two Bastrop hitters to seal the 1-0 win for Hutto.
