Pitchers that stood out at the Preseason All-State

On Sunday, February 22, 2015, Prep Baseball Report Virginia/DC hosted the 2015 Preseason All-State Showcase at Virginia Sports Complex in Ruther Glen, Virginia. Over 80 players from the Class of 2016 made the trek from all corners of the Commonwealth to participate on the eve of high school tryouts in Virginia. Here are some quick notes on pitchers that stood out:

Pitchers to watch this spring:

+Trey Alderman, RHP, 2016, Forest Park
Alderman’s fastball sat 82-85 mph and he commanded the pitch well. He flashed a good slider with late 10/4 break and running 67-71mph. Alderman’s change-up sat 72-77 mph with armside run.

+Matt Nickles, RHP, 2016, Colonial Forge
Nickles sat 84-86 mph with his fastball, touching 87 mph with good command of the pitch. He threw a sharp 12/6 curveball that ran 61-65 mph that he commanded well. His change-up was outstanding, and was thrown with full armspeed in the 71-73 mph range with late run on it.

+Robert Riddick, RHP, 2016, Paul VI Catholic (Virginia Tech)
Riddick’s fastball was 84-86 mph on the day with hard run to it. He threw a sharp, late breaking 11/5 slider that ran 73-75 mph. His change-up has improved since the fall, running 75-81 mph with fade to it. The future Hokie commanded all of his pitches well.

+Fox Semones, RHP/MIF, 2016, C.D. Hylton
Semones’ fastball sat 83-85 mph with hard, late run to it. His slider was sharp, with 10/4 break and full armspeed, sitting 70-73 mph. He also threw a fading change-up with full armspeed that ran 69-72 mph. He commanded all three pitches very well.

+Graham Seitz, RHP/1B, 2016, Herndon

Seitz’s fastball was 84-85 mph, touching 87 mph, with heavy sink to it. He commanded his fastball well. He threw a late breaking, sharp 10/4 slider that ran 73-75 mph. His change-up ran 77-79 mph with late armside run to it.

+Trey Shepard, RHP, 2016, C.D. Hylton
Shepard worked in the 86-88 mph range, touching 89 mph and few times with his fastball that showed good late life when he threw it to his armside. Shepard threw an 11/5 good, power breaking curveball and a tight, late breaking slider that ran 73-76 mph.

+Garrett Stallings, RHP, 2016, Grassfield (Tennessee)
Stallings’ fastball sat 87-88 mph, touching 89 mph with late run to it. His curveball had late 12/6 break to it ran 69-74 mph. He also showcased a tight, sharp slider that ran 79-82 mph. Stallings’ change-up faded and came in from 73-77 mph. The future Volunteer had elite command of all four pitches.

+Michael Taylor, LHP, 2016, Osbourn (George Mason)
Taylor’s fastball sat 83-85 mph, touching 86 mph with late run to it. His slider had late 10/4 break to it and ran 77-78 mph. His change-up had late fade to it and ran 77-79 mph. He used full armspeed for both offspeed pitches. The future Patriot showed outstanding command of all three pitches at the bottom of the strike zone.
