Elite Eight Team Rankings: Early Season Results

Weather has been an issue for many teams in our Preseason Elite Eight rankings but there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel. With a stretch of warmer and dryer weather in the extended forecast plenty of baseball is likely to be played prior to the net update to the Elite Eight rankings in each classification.

Elite Eight Rankings Updates

The Elite Eight team rankings will be updated on a bi-weekly basis culminating with a final set of rankings following the state championships in June. Here are the scheduled dates that updates are to be released.

Update 1: April 13
Update 2: April 27
Update 3: May 11
Update 4: May 25
Final Rankings: June 8

Following is a review of how the teams in our preseason rankings have performed to date:

CLass 3A

Rank School Notes
1 Hurricane
(7-2): 4-3 loss to #2 Jefferson and 6-5 loss to #6 Ripley are only losses on the season.
2 Jefferson
(8-1): Cougars started season on seven game win streak prior to 11-7 loss to Hammonton, NJ.
3 Nitro
(5-2): Wildcats only losses came to teams outside of West Virginia during the Mingo Bay Classic in Myrtle Beach, SC.
4 Washington
(6-2): Patriots averaging over 9 runs per game in the early going.
5 George Washington
(3-0): Mother nature has affected the Patriots early season schedule.
6 Ripley
(8-2): Lone in state loss at the hands of South Charleston. Big win over #1 Hurricane.
7 Wheeling Park
(2-2): Weather has hampered the Patriots ability to get on the field on a consistent basis.
8 Musselman
(4-6): The Appelman have played an aggressive early season schedule with a large percentage of their games against out of state competition.

CLass 2A

1 Bridgeport
(2-0): The Indians have managed to play just two games, but have outscored their opposition 22-4 in defense of their 2014 state title.
2 PikeView
(8-1): The Panthers lone loss was a 3-2 decision against Greenbrier East.
3 Sissonville
(5-5): The Indians have been up and down much of the early portion of the season.
4 Chapmanville Regional
(8-1): The Tigers have been nothing less than impressive outscoring opponents by a 121-15 margin. Among the eight wins is an 11-0 romp over #3 Sissonville.
5 East Fairmont
(8-3): A solid showing in the Mingo Bay Classic in Myrtle Beach, SC and a one run win over cross town rival Fairmont Senior have highlighted the Bees quick start.
6 Herbert Hoover
(1-3): Hoover pitching has struggled out of the gates yielding nearly 10 runs per game.
7 Ravenswood (3-5): Coming off a 26 win season, the Red Devils are still trying to find the right pieces to replace a large number of departed seniors.
8 Petersburg
(1-2): The Vikings have struggled out of the gates scoring just 4 runs in three games while yielding 25.

CLass A

1 Notre Dame
(5-1): The Irish have gotten off to a strong start in an effort to make a 3rd consecutive trip to Charleston.
2 Man
(3-3): The defending state champs have been competitive every night but lost much of their offense to graduation.
3 Moorefield
(4-1): The Yellowjackets split an DH with Berkeley Springs to open the season, but have been perfect since.
4 Clay-Battelle
(3-0): The Cee Bees have gotten off to a strong start outscoring opponents 41-4 to start the season.
5 Charleston Catholic
(5-2): The Irish have outscored their previous two opponents by a combined 30-0 score.
6 Parkersburg Catholic
(3-1): The Crusaders' lone loss came at the hands of the #5 Charleston Catholic.
7 Greenbrier West (4-2): Offense has not been an issue for the Cavaliers scoring nearly nine runs an outing.
8 Bishop Donahue
(3-3): The Bishops look to use the momentum of their most recent 5-1 win over Magnolia to build momentum moving into the heart of their league schedule.
