Prep Baseball Texas Staff

The 2024 Texas high school baseball season is quickly approaching and, as usual, excitement is abound throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Texas.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Austin at the UIL State Tournament in June, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Texas. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, eventually releasing our Preseason Power 30 rankings that’ll carry us into the opening week of action.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week and updating the Power 30 rankings.

Our 2024 preseason coverage continues today.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Longview Lobos, led by Coach Jim Goldman, are coming off an impressive 2023 season in which they finished as 5A Regional Semifinalists. The Lobos have a lot to look forward to in 2024 as they return much of the 2023 roster with their strengths being experience, pitching, and defense.

The Lobos’ returning roster is headlined by two-sport Oklahoma signee, OF Taylor Tatum, who will be playing both baseball and football for the Sooners whenever he arrives on campus. Tatum is a 4 star running back, and he is currently ranked No. 65 in the state for the 2024 class and will be an x-factor in determining how far this Lobos squad goes in 2024.  The Longview senior class will be rounded out by OF Ronald Woods Jr. (uncommitted), UTL Andrew Tutt (uncommitted), RHP/OF Campbell Williams (uncommitted), and UTL DaTravion Gates (uncommitted).

Longview returns an equally talented junior class for this season as well led by Houston commit C Drew Flores, who is currently ranked No. 103 in the state for his class. Longview features another ranked junior within the state in INF/RHP Kieffer Doxey, who is uncommitted and currently ranked No. 195. Flores and Doxey will be joined by RHP Cole Ramey (uncommitted) to complete the list of key junior returners for this season. One newcomer to know for the Lobos this year is sophomore UTL TJ Jackson, who hopes to become an impact player on varsity.

With their returning roster, pitching, and solid defensive group, the Longview Lobos should be a team to watch this coming spring. Look for the Lobos to make a ton of noise again come 5A playoff time.
