LUBBOCK, TX- Aledo headed out west to Lubbock, for a bi-district playoff series where they will take on Lubbock Monterey in best of three game series.

This contest was a very quick affair lasting only about an hour and a half, with both pitchers going into the later innings. We have seen Monterey multiple times this season, a club that is fundamentally solid and that will not make many mistakes. This was our first look at an Aledo team that has a lot to like with guys like TCU commit OF Garrison Berkley (No. 47 in the PBR Texas 2020 class rankings, and No. 5 ranked OF), C Creed Willems (No. 21 in the PBR Texas 2021 class rankings, and No. 4 ranked C), and uncommitted RHP Logan Hewitt.

Monterey would start the scoring in the bottom of the second on an RBI double from junior 3B Nate Davila giving the Plainsmen a 1-0 lead. In the third a leadoff double from senior CF Briley Alexander, who would later score on a fielder’s choice ball to the right-side from senior RF Bobby Roberts, making 2-0 Monterey.

In the fourth Aledo would add two runs, that started with consecutive singles from SS Dylan Mach and Berkley putting runners in scoring position for the Bearcats. Willems would drive in the first run for Aledo on fielder’s choice ball to the right-side to score Mach. Berkley would later score on a passed ball to tie the game at two apiece.

Fast forwarding to the seventh, with Monterey leading (3-2) Aledo would answer with a run from a clutch RBI single from RF Nathen Fingar that would tie the game (3-3) to send it to the bottom half of the seventh.

Monterey would find themselves in a bases loaded situation in the seventh, after a couple of base-on-balls. A passed ball would score Alexander to give the Plainsmen the walk-off (3-4) win over Aledo. Monterey takes the first game to give them 1-0 lead in the series, game 2 will take place on Saturday in Aledo at noon.

Final Score: Monterey 4, Aledo 3.

SCOUT NOTES

Logan Hewitt, RHP, 2020, Aledo
Uncommitted. At an estimated 5-foot-10, 160-pounds, Hewitt has an athletic, lean-muscular frame. The right-hander was very impressive going 6 IP and collecting 8K for Aledo. Starts from a high ¾ arm slot, athletic, smooth, effortless, repeatable delivery. Fastball comes out clean at 86-87 touched 88 in the early innings, settled in at 84-85 as the outing went on. Curveball, 11-5 shape, sat at 70-71, was able to collect a few punchouts with it. Showed a changeup at 76-79, with late sink that he would mix in every so often. Overall, possess high ceiling-tools that is likely to add more strength and velocity as he fills into his frame.
