Road to Baum: 4A State Tournament Game Notes

The opening round of the 4A State Tournament they had to be starting pitching, as the winners all received solid starts of 5 innings or more, which resulted in their teams advancing to the second round.

Lonoke 5 vs Pottsville 1

2018 Kaden Stuart pitched 5 innings allowed 1 run to pick up the win for the Jack Rabbits. He commanded the strike zone with a low-80’s fastball and an average breaking ball keeping hitter off balance. Offensively Lonoke, took advantage of 4 Pottsville errors to manufacture 3 runs early. 2017 MIF Casey Martin put an exclamation point on the win with a 2 run opposite field home run in the 6th to widen the gap to 5-1. Martin also pitched the final 1 2/3 innings.

Lonoke will play Nashville at 10:00 AM

Monticello 7 vs Heber Springs 0

2020 LHP Nick Griffin through a gem pitching 7 innings of shutout baseball to help the Billie advance to the next round. Griffin used a solid two pitch mix with a fastball thrown 74-77 and curveball throw 68-70 mph. He induced ground balls consistently which allowed him to keep his pitch count low. Offensively Monticello pounded a consistent assault scoring runs in 5 of their 6 at bats.

Monticello will play Booneville at 12:30

Shiloh Christian 3 vs Arkadelphia 0

2018 RHP Landon Brown was dominant in a complete game shutout, throwing 7 innings allowing just 3 hits while striking out 14. He was sharp from start to finish locating his fastball 84-86 mph working up to 89 mph. Offensively the Saints received solid production from 2018 CIF Luke Johnson who was 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs, a sac fly a single and a walk.

Shiloh will play Central Arkansas Christian at 3:00

Pea Ridge 5 vs Westside 2

Pea Ridge received a big time outing from 2018 RHP Jakota Sainsbury, as he went 6 2/3 innings allowing no earned runs. He showed the ability to locate his fastball and curveball consistently keeping hitters off balance. Their offense used the long ball to with 2017 Zaine Holly, 2017 RHP/3B Jakota Sainsbury and 2019 MIF/RHP Tyler O’Dell all hitting home runs.

Players That Stood Out

2017 MIF/RHP Casey Martin, Not his best day but still made some plays and showed off enough tools, to back up his No.1 Ranking in the PBR 2017 Rankings. He showed advanced running ability running 4.08, 4.06 and 4. 11. His fourth at bat there was no run time as he hit a hanging breaking ball out of the ball park. Defensively solid action, with arm strength that carries.

2020 LHP Nick Griffin, an advanced athlete which still grades as a pitcher or position player. He had a sound day on the mound, but also impressed as an athlete defending his position. Offensively he did a sound job keeping his hands in the contact zone, and showed the ability to hit the baseball the other way.

2018 Landon Brown, Brown was dominant from a H ¾ arm slot with a quick arm, his delivery uses some effort but it was a repeated consistently. He commanded the strike zone with fastballs working as high as 89 mph. His curveball put hitters away thrown 67-70 mph, with late 12/6 break. Brown proved why he will be competing in the All-State Game on May 23rd.

2019 MIF Tyler Odell, O Dell impressed with solid defense actions, a smooth exchange and a solid arm with carry. Offensively he had good at bats showing the ability to make loud contact consistently. He also showed the ability for power as he drove the ball out of the yard.
