Underclass Spotlight: No. 11 2016 LHP Brice Johnson, Pine Creek HS

By John Cackowski
State Director

Recently PBR sat down with LHP Brice Johnson. Johnson is currently ranked No. 11 in the Colorado 2016 class. Standing on the mound Johnson is an imposing 6-foot-6 pitcher who is still growing into his body. Tall in his set-up, Johnson pitches in the mid 80's from a high 3/4 arm with good slot and good extention to the plate. He also has a  11/5 mid 70's curve ball and a change up that sits around 73 mph. Pitching for Pine Creek High School, Johnson had to wait his turn last spring due to the depth the Pine Creek squad had. Coming of a strong summer pitching for Slammers 16U team, Johnson looks to dominate in the spring. A phenomenal student, with his grades and physical projectibility the sky is the limit for Johnson. We look forward to seeing Johnson participate in our Pre-Season All-State Event on 2/22/14.

PBR: At what point in your career did you become serious about taking your game to the next level?

Johnson: Sophomore year – once I realized I have the potential to play at the next level

PBR:  What are you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at? Feel free to elaborate as much as possible.

Johnson: I would like to be able to play college baseball in a program which has great coaching and always has the ability to win.

PBR:  What schools do you have interest in?

Johnson: I haven’t narrowed that down yet – I’m looking for a good fit academically as well as for baseball.

PBR: What factors will sway your decision in choosing a college?

Johnson: Degrees offered and strength of their academics – I have an interest in Business or economics.

PBR: Where if any have you made visits to?

Johnson: Air Force Academy

PBR: What colleges have you been in contact with?

Johnson: Air Force Academy, Nebraska, New Mexico

PBR: Do you have any timetable as to when you are looking to make your decision

Johnson: I am in no hurry to commit – want to be sure I have a good fit for me.

PBR: What do you do in the off-season to keep yourself in baseball shape and prepare for the upcoming season?

Johnson: I have played basketball the past two seasons for high school so I had little time for pre-season baseball workouts. This year, though, I am going to focus on my overall strength and participate in the pre-season baseball workouts with my high school coaches and a pitching coach. I am almost done with my first competitive fall ball season with the Slammers and feel I have made some improvements which should help me in the Spring. I still have a lot of work to do though!

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Johnson: When I threw my first no-hitter my Freshman year.

PBR: How are your academics? GPA? ACT? SAT? Any academic awards?

Johnson: My GPA is 4.2 and I plan to take the ACT this winter. I have received Academic Letters for both my Freshman and Sophomore years of school for maintaining a 4.0 or greater GPA. I will be inducted into the National Honor Society next week.

PBR: How was your high school season last year? Team record? Post season awards? Stats?

Johnson: Pine Creek varsity went 9-1 in conference play. I was in the starting rotation for JV pitching last year - I faced 153 batters and struck out 47 of them. My few outings on the mound for varsity were good experiences.

PBR:  Preview your high school season? How will your team be this year? Expectations?

Johnson: We have a lot of varsity starters returning this year. I am looking forward to next season and hope we can go deep into the play-offs.
