Power 25 Rankings: March 10

As high school baseball in Louisiana is seemingly in full swing, it is time to release the first edition of the in-season Power 25 rankings. The first couple weeks have caused significant shift in the rankings, as expected. We see some teams fall due to tough starts, as well as some new faces to the list.

After the release of the Preseason Power 25 created a lot of discussion as to where teams should rank, we decided to give some insight as to how are rankings are developed. There are a few factors that are weighed when deciding these rankings, and how we form our opinion. In no particular order, things like win/loss record, strength of schedule, quality wins, number of high-level prospects, and of course the eye-test are things that formulate these rankings.

With that said let’s take a look at some teams that cracked the Power 25 this week for the first time:

Franklinton HS (13): Led by senior outfielder Josh Magee, No. 20 in the 2015 class, Franklinton has gotten off to an outstanding start. A very impressive showing in the WGNO tournament in New Orleans made us look twice. Magee sets the table for what is sure to be a potent lineup moving forward. After they gave this week’s No. 1 team, Jesuit HS, their only loss, Franklinton HS could no longer be ignored.

Holy Cross HS (20): Led by senior Christian Clayton and junior Matthew Muhleisen, the Tigers have roared out of the gate to a 7-3 start. Showing well in tournaments outside of the New Orleans metro-area, the Tigers look to make a push in the always tough Catholic League. If the Tigers continue their winning ways, their ranking could skyrocket, as the schedule will most certainly heat up in the coming weeks.

Chalmette HS (21): One of the most surprising starts of the young 2015 season is that of the Chalmette Owls. Led by sophomore right-hander Rafe Schindler, the Owls have gotten out to a blazing 8-2 start. But perhaps they were most impressive in a loss against then-No. 1 St. Thomas More HS. The Owls took a prospect-heavy team to the brink and showed why they should be a team to keep a close eye on moving forward.

Alexandria Senior HS (23): Led by hard-throwing 6-foot-5 junior, Matthew Beck, ASH HS has gotten out to a fantastic 6-2 start. With a legitimate No. 1 starter on the hill, ASH HS should be a force in CenLA for the remainder of this spring.

+ Also, Prep Baseball Report Louisiana will be hosting its first event on Monday May 25, Memorial Day. The Underclass Trials is open to any 2017 & 2018 graduates. Space is limited so don’t wait! This event will serve as an identifier for not only the invite-only Top Prospects Games, but also the premier underclassmen scouting event in the country, the PBR Future Games, powered by Under Armour.
