Michigan Spotlight Game: Grand Ledge vs Holt - Doubleheader

Grand Ledge and Holt squared off Thursday in a doubleheader with the CAAC Blue conference title up for grabs.

Both teams sent their senior aces to the mound in game one, as 2017 Wyatt Rush got the start for Grand Ledge and 2017 Jesse Heikkinen took mound for Holt.

Grand Ledge took advantage of a pair of walks by Heikkinen in the bottom of the first and took a 2-0 lead on a two run double by 2020 Logan Hylek.

2017 Xavier Farr extended Grand Ledge’s lead to 3-0 with a two-out RBI triple in the bottom of the second and 2018 Cal Johnston led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run that made it 4-0.

Heikkinen was lights out after allowing the home run to Johnston, striking out six of the next seven batters, and held Grand Ledge to just two hits the rest of the game.

Holt scored twice in the top of the fifth to cut Grand Ledge’s lead to 4-2, as Heikkinen drove in a run with a fielder’s choice and 2018 Spencer Baldwin added another with a RBI single.

Holt got a runner to second with one out in the top of the sixth and loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh, but Rush worked out of both jams to secure the 4-2 win for Grand Ledge.

Rush got the win on the mound, striking out six in seven innings of work, while Heikkinen took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out 13 over six innings.

2018 Burrell Jones threw a gem in game two as Holt won 4-1 to split the doubleheader.

Jones was perfect through three innings, striking out seven of the nine batters he faced, and Holt’s offense came up with some early run support, scoring in the second, third, and fourth innings to build a 4-0 lead.

2017 Hunter Rickard, 2017 Drake Soblesky, and 2017 Dan Clark each drove in a run and 2017 Tyler Brown added a solo home run for the Rams.

Jones lost his perfect game with one out in the fourth on a single by 2017 Sam Goodman and lost the shutout with one out in the seventh after Rush doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hylek, but continued to rack up the strikeouts, finishing with 15 in the complete game win.

Despite losing game two, Grand Ledge won the CAAC Blue conference championship, edging out Holt by a game in the standings.
