Players of the Week: Johnny Slater and Cooper Logsdon

By Mike Penn
Michigan Director of Scouting

Pitcher Player

Johnny Slater, OF/LHP, Southfield-Lathrup HS, 2013

We recently re-adjusted a few players in the 2013 rankings including Southfield-Lathrup's Johnny Slater, who we moved to No. 8 in the class after watching him a few times this past week.  Slater right on queue threw a no-hitter and struck out 13 last Monday.

During his outing Slater was up to 89mph and utilized a sweeping breaking ball to keep hitter off balance. Slater is a potential two-way player for Michigan next year, that is of course assumes he attends school and is not drafted.

Position Player

Cooper Logsdon, SS/2B, Jenison HS, 2013

The weather limited play last week significantly, but Logsdon was a key leader in Jenison's opening victories against Lowell.  Logsdon went 5-5 with three doubles a single and three walks in the doubleheader. Logsdon, who is committed to Kalamazoo College next fall, powered the Wildcats in their first conference action.

Honorable Mention

Hector Gutierrez, SS/RHP, Detroit Western Intl. HS, 2013
Gutierrez gave Slater a run for his money on the Pitcher of the Week award.  Gutierrez struck out 18 hitters and ran his fastball up to 91mph last week against Detroit King.  Gutierrez also has generated some draft buzz around the state.
