Q&A with Wichita State Commit Austin Schultz of Norris High School

PBR Comments:
5-foot-8, 170-pound shortstop is one of the top athletes in the 2016 class. Schultz had a strong showing at the 2016 Top Prospect showcase running a 6.72 60 yard sprint. High motor on the infield with active footwork, soft hands and above average velocity of 88 mph across the infield for his age. At the plate, shows a linear swing that produces middle to pull side line drives.

PBR: Why did you choose Wichita State?

Wichita State has an incredible baseball tradition and I wanted to be apart of that history. The baseball program is on an uprising and are in good hands with the coaching staff that is there right now. When I went on my unofficial visit last year I meet Coach Walker and Coach Butler, who are incredible people let alone incredible baseball coaches. Being around the staff and players I could sense the family environment and I fell in love with it. 

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

I was also considering Nebraska.
 

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?

 

Coach Walker first saw me at Bardos Baseball Camp in Parker, Colorado  last winter. Immediately a relationship was formed and I was extremely comfortable around him. Wichita State was a school that I was extremely interested in at that time, so it was the perfect opportunity.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?

 

I definitely feel a relief knowing that I found a place that will be home to me for the next couple of years. I can focus a lot more on the season ahead, and it gives me that extra motivation to work harder. 
 

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?

 

The coaching staff was definitely the deciding factor. I feel like they are coaches that will help me push my game to the next level, and prepare me for the future. 
 

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?

 

The most helpful people on my journey have been my parents. Without them I wouldn't have had the opportunities to achieve my goals and I'm extremely thankful for them.


PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?

 

Going into the recruiting process I didn't know what to think. When I started to get recruited the relationships that I was able to create made the recruiting process a lot easier. Overall I really enjoyed the recruiting process and showing people what I can do. 


PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?

 

The coaching staff is going to push me to become a better player and teammate. I believe they are going to put me in the best possible position to succeed and will support me the whole way.


PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?

 

My most memorable baseball moment was last summer playing on the USA Baseball 17u National Team. We practiced at the Northwestern baseball field and played games against each other for five days. The last day that I was there, we got to play at Wrigley field home of the 2016 World Series Champions the Chicago Cubs.  It was an eye opening experience and I got to play with and against some of the top players in the 2018 class. 

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?

 

The best player that I have competed against is my good friend Shay Schanaman. Since we were ten years old we've played against each other and he is an animal on the baseball field. With Shay committing to the University of Nebraska it is awesome to think that we will be playing against each other at the college level also.
