Top Prospect Spotlight: 2017 2B/SS Matt McDermott (St. Peter's Prep)

Sean McGrath
Scouting Director, New Jersey

Name: Matt McDermott
High School: St. Peter’s Prep
Position(s): 2B/SS
Projected Position: 2B

Background

McDermott was one of a dozen underclassmen to attend the inaugural New Jersey Top Prospect Games on July 16th and his invitation was validated by the second baseman’s performance throughout the event. The athletic, 5-foot-8, 150 pound prospect plays for an excellent St. Peter’s Prep baseball program which has produced many division one commits. He plays his travel baseball for Wladyka Baseball, one of the most premier programs in Northern New Jersey and the entire state. McDermott is certainly in a position to receive exposure over the next year or so in order to play at the next level.

Scouting Report

His frame is prototypical for a second baseman at the next level and yet, his frame indicates that he may be able to put on good size as he physically matures. He ran a 6.88 in the 60-yard dash and that speed transferred well to the diamond, particularly on the bases. He is an aggressive player offensively who has a feel for what he does best at the plate. He is very simple at the plate with minimal movement pre-pitch. He hits from a wide, athletic base and is short to the ball in an effort to be an all-fields hitter. He does a nice job of spraying line drives all over the field, only occasionally rolling over a pitch on the outer half.
He profiles as a high level defender with an athletic yet fundamental approach to fielding a ground ball. He plays through the ball well with solid glove skills and a quick transfer. He also shows the ability to throw from multiple arm slots which proves to be valuable at the 2B position. McDermott is a hard-nosed ball player who could be valuable to many programs.
