Top Prospect Games: Team Gold Player Analysis





On June 23-24, we hosted the third annual Top Prospect Games at Grand Park in Westfield, IN.  The event consisted of 117 players, primarily within the 2016 and 2017 classes, which made up six teams (Red, White, Gold, Purple, Gray and Black).

Below we take a look at the players from Team Gold.

ALPHABETICAL ORDER

Owen Callaghan, LHP/1B, Hamilton Southeastern, 2017:  The 5-foot-10 180 pound southpaw pitches from a high 3/4 slot with average arm speed.  Long arm action.  Regular effort in the delivery with some rhythm.  Level shoulders, good line to the plate.  Lands open with an athletic finish.  Fastball was heavy at 80-82 with slight run and thrown for strikes.  10/4 breaking ball was 69-71 with gradual break. Across the diamond from 1B was 78 mph.  Ran a 7.14 60 yard dash.  At the plate hits from an open setup.  Loads back, long stride.  Average bat speed with a short, level path to the baseball.  Line drive type hitter.  Has some stiffness at the plate.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 79 mph. 

Tony Carmola, SS/2B, South Bend St. Joe, 2017:  The 5-foot-10 175 pound infielder ran a 6.95 60 yd dash.  Possesses sure hands defensively with good feet.  Exchange was clean and plays through the ball with some athleticism.  Long, 3/4 arm action across the field at 78 with accuracy.  At the plate hits from an open setup.  Loads back, short stride.  Above average bat speed with a good approach.  Level path, gets to extension with ability to drive the gaps.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 86 mph.  

Adisyn Coffey, SS/RHP, Delta, 2017:  The 6-foot-1 160 pound infielder ran a 6.87 60 yd dash.  Defensively, Adisyn showcased soft hands and quick footwork.  Athletic actions in the field. Throws were accurate with carry and topped out at 84mph.  Offensively, he produced an exit velocity of 84mph.  Hits from an open setup.  Loads back, short stride.  Good balance throughout the swing.  Possesses quick hands at the plate.  Level path to the baseball, regularly getting to extension.  Line drive type hitter.  

Arian Coffey, 3B/RHP, Delta, 2016:  The 6-foot-4 155 pounder showcased sure hands defensively with a quick, clean exchange.  Footwork is fluid.  Across the diamond was 75 mph with accuracy. Ran a 7.27-60  On the mound the right-handed pitcher displayed a fastball that sat 76-77mph with some sink..  Breaking ball has downer action at 61-62mph.  Arian’s delivery has a long arm action and good balance.  More of a tilt/topple delivery.   Offensively, Arian produced an exit velocity of 74mph. Hits from a balanced setup.  Stride is short, loads back.  Good balance in the swing.  Long, level path to the baseball, showcased some pop to his pull-side.  Fluid rhythm.  

Colin Donahue, C, Carmel, 2017:  The 6-foot-2 200 pound catcher showcased pop times between 2.00-2.05.   Velocity from the crouch was 73mph.  Colin has a quick exchange and long feet. Has good balance in both his primary and secondary positions.  Solid receiver.  Colin ran a 7.4 60 yd dash. At the plate hits out of a balanced setup and loads back.  Short stride, good use of the lower half.  Overall good approach to the ball with above average bat speed.  Short, level path to the ball, gets to extension.  Line drive type hitter with fluid rhythm.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 87 mph. 

Taylor Faust, 3B/1B, Roncalli 2017:  The 6-foot-1 200 pound corner infielder ran a 7.58 60 yd dash.  Possesses sure hands defensively with a clean exchange.  Across the diamond was 71 mph with some accuracy. Plays through the ball well.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup.  Slight arm bar when he loads.  Stride is short.  Tendency to dive.  Level path to the baseball.  Line drive type hitter,  Recorded a high exit velocity of 82 mph.  

Seth Fleming, INF, North Central, 2017:  The 6-foot-1 155 pound infielder ran a 7.13 60 yd dash.  Defensively, Seth displays soft hands and quick exchange.  Arm action is ¾.  Good feel for position. Across the diamond was 73 mph with some accuracy.  Offensively,  Seth produced an exit velocity of 84 mph.  Hits from a balanced setup, loads back.  Stride is short with some use of the lower half.  Good balance throughout his swing.  Short path to the baseball.  Overall good approach. 

Luke Florek, OF/SS, Western, 2017:  The 6-foot-1 175 pound utility player displayed good actions at both positions, but projects more as an outfielder as of now.  Arm action is loose and long.  Throws from the outfield were 84mph.  Exchange was quick and athletic.  Offensively, Luke produced an exit velocity of 84.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup.  Loads back.  Stride is long.  Level path to the baseball, gets to extension.  Showed the ability to drive the gaps.  Good balance throughout the swing. 

Tyler Frank,  C/OF, Lake Central, 2017:  The 6-foot-2 175 pound catcher ran a 6.95 60 yd dash.  Defensively, he had pop times between 2.19-2.29 and a velocity of 70mph from the crouch. Showcased the ability to block well.  Offensively,hits from an open setup.  Loads back, uphill path.  Stride is short.  Pull-side hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 84 mph.  

Clay Hinrichsen, RHP, Southwood, 2016:  The 6-foot-5 190 pound right-handed pitcher filled up the strike zone with a FB between 82-85.  Fastball has some arm side run and sink.   Curveball was thrown with 11/5 shape at 68-69mph.  Good feel for both pitches.  11/5 shaped breaking ball will need to add life to be a next level out pitch.  Delivery was clean with room for more velocity if adds weight. Pitches from a 3/4 slot, long arm action. Stab on the backside.  Level shoulders, good line to the plate.   

Evan Huffman, OF/SS, Southern Wells, 2017:  The 6-foot-2 185 pound outfielder ran a 6.94 60 yd dash. Possesses average hands defensively with fluid feet and a clean exchange.  Long, 3/4 arm action with accuracy at 83 mph.  Offensively, hits from a balanced setup.  Loads back using a short stride.  Good use of the lower half with good balance.  Possesses quick bat speed with a good approach.  Level path to the baseball.  Fluid rhythm, line drive typer hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 87 mph. 

Jake Hurd, OF, Zionsville, 2016:  The 6-foot 175 pound outfielder ran a 6.78 60 yd dash.  Defensively, Jake has above average hands and quick footwork.  Arm action is long.  Positional velocity was 85mph.  Offensively, Jake is slightly open with a small leg kick.  Tends to dive onto front foot.  Bat path is level and produced several line drives.  Exit velocity was 86mph.

Jacob Hurtubise, OF, Zionsville, 2016:  The 5-foot-11 155 pound outfielder ran a 6.54 60 yd dash.  In the outfield, he showcased a plus arm with throws that had carry and were between 89-91mph.   Hands are soft and exchange is quick.  Offensively, he has a slight open stance.  Bat path is short and hands are average.  Exit velocity was 83mph.   

Jacob Layton, 3B/RHP, Lafayette Harrison, 2016:  The 5-foot-9 175 pound infielder ran a 7.76 60 yd dash. Displayed fluid footwork in the field with a clean exchange.  Showcased soft hands with some athleticism. Long arm action across the field at 75 mph.  At the plate hits from a balanced stance with wide feet. Loads back, stride is short, tendency to dive.  Average bat speed, long path to the baseball.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 78 mph.  

Jake Lewis, 1B/LHP, Providence, 2017:  The 6-foot-1 185 pound first baseman ran a 7.26 60 yd dash. In the field works well around the bag.  Across the diamond was 76 mph. Offensively, the LHH hits from an open setup,  Loads back and uses a short stride.  Possesses quick bat speed with a good approach. Short path to the ball, gets to extension.  Ball jumps off his bat.  Fluid rhythm. Recorded a high exit velocity of 92 mph. Ability to drive the gaps.  On the mound, the lefty showcased a fastball that sat 76-80mph   Curveball was 69-71 with gradual, sweeping break.  Change-up was thrown between 70-71 near FB arm speed and has some depth. Pitches from a high 3/4 slot with average arm speed.  Uphill shoulders, with some choppiness in the delivery.  Lands open.  

Jack Perkins, RHP/OF, Kokomo, 2018:  The 6-foot 180 pound right-handed pitcher showcased a FB that sat 85-87.  FB has late life and was thrown for strikes.  Slider was thrown at 71-73 with late break.  Both pitches were thrown with command.  Jack’s delivery has a  loose, H3/4 arm action and good balance.  Drop and drive type delivery with good rhythm.   Stays in line to the plate, finishes athletic.  Easy effort.  High follow in the 2018 class.  At the plate hits out of a wide stance, minimal stride.  Small load back.  Good use of the lower half with good balance throughout.  Showcased quick hands at the plate, gets to extension. Short, slightly uphill path to the baseball.  Line drive hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 83 mph.  Possesses athleticism in the outfield along with a strong, accurate arm at 87 mph.

Cameron Pferrer, RHP, Carmel, 2017:  The 5-foot-11 175 pound right-handed pitcher showcased a fastball that sat 85-87 with some down action.  Control was erratic drew several defensive swings.   Cameron’s CH was 71-73 with some depth.   CB sat 71-74 with more of a late slider break.  Arm action is quick and loose.  Stride is long.  Drop and drive type delivery with good direction to the plate. 

Brian Skelton, 1B/RHP, Westfield, 2017: The 6-foot-3 205 pound first baseman ran a 7.25 60 yd dash.  Offensively, Brian has quick bat speed and good balance.  Potential for some pull side pop.  Brian produced an exit velocity of 87mph.  Level path to the baseball with an overall good approach.  Fluid rhythm.  On the mound, his FB was 81-84 and thrown for strikes.  Breaking ball was 70-71 with 11/5 shape.  Change-up was thrown at 73-76mph with some arm side run.  Pitches from a high 3/4 slot, long, quick arm action.  Tall to fall delivery with some rhythm.  Level shoulders, good line to the plate.
