Stock Report: 2015 OF/RHP JJ Johnson

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director - Wisconsin

Today’s stock report highlights two way player JJ Johnson. Johnson is a two way threat from Madison Edgewood HS. The outfielder and right handed pitcher is extremely athletic and has the tools to contribute to a Crusader team that went 17-10 last year, and finished second in the Badger South Conference with an 8-4 record. Johnson has an athletic make up.

Johnson has an above average build standing 6-foot, 180-pounds. In the outfield he has a plus arm for his age touching 89 mph as a sophomore. His arm works from an over the top slot showing accuracy, his arm plays well as his ball stays on line with carry. His defensive actions play through the baseball well, his hands work and his footwork is fluid.

Offensively, Johnson hits from an open stance using a smooth load and short stride, demonstrating good balance throughout. He shows advanced bat speed for his age generating 83 mph exit velocities from the tee. His bat path shows occasional uphill tendencies but makes hard contact. His approach is mainly to his pull side and shows occasional pop. While still only a sophomore, Johnson has tools that make him a potentially high offensively threat.

Johnson also shows upside on the mound. He throws from an over the top slot with a short arm action. He works downhill with his fastball at 80-83 mph, its lively action gets through the zone quicker than its velocity indicates. His curveball has some bite at 73-74 mph and thrown with the same aggressiveness as his fastball. His changeup has sink and again is thrown aggressively for strikes at 79-81 mph. Johnson has plenty of upside on the mound as well, he throws everything aggressively and shows control of his entire repertoire.

Johnson looks to have a bright future with his advanced athleticism and tools.
