Top Prospect Games: Purple Team Analysis

On June 24-25 PBR Indiana hosted the second annual Top Prospect Games at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN on the beautiful all-turf Bart Kaufman field.

Indiana's Top Prospect Games has quickly established itself as one of the premier events in the Midwest with over 100 players participating in the event each of the last two years. 

Below we take a look at notes on players from Team Purple: 

In Alphabetical Order by First Name

Austin Alles,3B/1B, Jasper HS, 2015; 6-foot-3 inches,  230 pounds, Strong, athletic corner guy. Throws from a low ¾ slot, 78mph across the infield with average carry with average hands. He generates fast bat speed from a balanced stance and a short stride. Gap to Gap type hitter.

Austin Shirley, OF, Noblesville HS, 2016; 5 foot-9 inches, 170 pounds, 4.30-H-1st, Athletic outfielder, throws 74 from right field with a long arm, average hands and a solid ball transfer. At the plate he hits from a open stance with a short stride, average bat speed on a level plain. Line drive type hitter that makes contact.

Baylee Adams, C/3B, North Montgomery HS, 2016; 6- foot – 1 inch, 185 pounds, 2.0-2.07 pop time. Athletic  catcher with a plus arm. Throws are short, quick and on target to 2b. He has average hands and good feet behinds the plate, works hard. Fast bat from a balanced stance with a short, smooth swing. Line drive hitter with added strength will hit for power.

CJ Vaughn, RHP/OF, Ben Davis HS, 2015; A 5-foot-10, 160 pound OF/RHP with tons of athleticism.  Shows good arm strength at 86 from the OF using a long arm action.  Hands are average with quick feet and a clean exchange.  At the plate starts in a balanced setup, using a smooth load.  Stride is short with good use of lower half.  Bat speed is quick and gets to extension.  Line drive type hitter with fluid rhythm.  On the mound pitches from a 3/4 slot with a quick, short arm action.  Head snaps at release.  Fastball was up to 84 and kept down in the zone.  11/5 breaking ball sat 68-70 with a sharp break, but inconsistent. 

Carter Bridge, SS/OF, Lafayette Harrison HS, 2016; 5 foot-11 inches, 170 pounds,  Strong, athletic player.  Soft hands at SS with good actions. Quick feet and a quick easy ball exchange. He is capable of playing several positions. 84 mph across the infield with carry and consistently on target. Fast bat, pull/ power type hitter, hits from a balanced stance with a short fluid stride hands controlled the bat.

Dalton Laney, RHP/SS, Rockville HS, 2016; 6 foot-4 inches, 185 pounds mature, strong, athletic player. Hits from an open stance with a short stride and a fast bat, level swing, gap to gap hitter. His arm from SS was short and quick, throws were always on target. Plus hands, outstanding footwork up the middle with a quick ball transfer, great feel for the game and his position. Will be able to play multiple positions in college. On the mound he threw his fastball (83-85) and slider (72-74) for strikes. Breaking ball was tight and late breaking from a ¾ arm angle and a quick easy release.

Drew Reich, RHP, Charlestown HS, 20156 foot-1 inch, 175 pounds, Athletic right hand pitcher. Comes at hitters from a long, ¾ slot with a easy delivery. Fastball was 76-78 and had a tendency to be up in the zone. Curveball was 67 with gradual break. Threw both pitches for strikes.

Devon Hensley, OF/INF, Center Grove HS, 2015, 6 foot/ 175 pounds, 4.24-H-1st from the right side, Threw 87 from the outfield on target and with carry. Athletic player with average hands, fluid feet and a clean ball transfer.  Hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, average bat speed on a level path. Line drive type hitter.

Dylan Kiracofe, OF/RHP, Lafayette Central Catholic HS, 2015; 5 foot- 11 inches, 170 pounds,  Long throwing arm from the outfield, 88mph with carry and on target. Average hands and quick feet, clean ball exchange, fields his position well. Athletic hitter with a short stride and a explosive lower half, generates average bat speed with a level swing, line drive type hitter. On the mound he was 84-86 mph with heavy downhill plain and in the zone. Slider was 68mph with gradual movement; change up was his second best pitch at 74 mph with sink and run. His delivery was short, quick and easy. Threw all three pitches for strikes.

Evan Finke, C, Columbus North HS, 2015; 5 foot- 11 inches, 200 pounds, 4.54-H-1st, 2.08-2.18 pop time. 91 mph bat exit speed.  Athletic catcher that moves well behind the plate. Average hands, good exchange with above average feet. Handles the bat well and will hit for power.

Jacob Cantleberry, LHP, Center Grove HS, 2016; 6 foot,  180 pounds, Athletic pitcher, throws from a ¾ slot with a loose easy delivery. Fastball was 82-84 mph with heavy downhill plain that would elevate with effort and velocity. Slider was 68-70 mph and serviceable with gradual break, Changeup was 69 mph with life and in the zone.

Jacob Brewer, LHP,1B, Southridge HS, 2015; 6 foot-1 inch, 195 pounds,  Arm works well from the left side, high 3/4 slot with some effort. Fastball was 81-84 with life, pounds the strike zone and mixes speed from a ¾ slot. Slider was 70-74 with sharp break, works fast and displayed some pitchability.  Athletic switch hitting 1b that had some swagger and pop in the bat.

Jake Franklin, MIF, Roncalli HS, 2016; 6 foot, 175 pounds, L/R, 4.31-H-1st with an 87 mph bat exit speed. Strong athletic hitter that can make adjustments and hit off speed pitches. Hits from a balanced stance with a short stride and an explosive level swing, will hit for power. He battles at the plate. Possesses soft hands, fluid feet and a clean ball transfer. Plays hard and has a good feel for his position.

Michael Carmosino, OF/INF, Noblesville HS, 2016; 6 foot -1 inch, 185 pounds, athletic position player with soft hands and a good feel for the game.  Strong frame with a long arm (83 mph from the OF, 82 mph from SS) with carry and on target.  Solid hitter with a balanced stance, short, smooth load, with good bat speed and a slight upper cut.

Michael Minks, C/3B, Crawfordsville HS, 2015; 6 foot- 1 inch, 185 pounds, 2.05-2.25 pop time. Long ¾ arm thrower on target with carry from behind the plate. Soft hands, quick feet and above average ball exchange. Hits from a balanced stance with a smooth, short stride, average bat speed and an inside /out path.

Mitch Ubelhor, RHP, Avon HS, 2016; 6 foot- 1 inch, 180 pounds, Athletic frame, short, quick ¾ arm delivery. Fastball was 83-86 mph with downhill plain and arm side run, slider was 75 mph with plus movement, change up 75-79mph with sink.  He was consistently in the strike zone. 

Tanner Gaff, RHP/1B,Whitko HS, 2016; 6 foot – 3 inches, 210 pounds, bats left/ throws right, Short ¾ arm across the infield with average hands, fluid feet and a clean ball exchange. Hits for average, gap to gap type hitter with a balanced stance and long tap n go stride, average bat speed, slight upper cut. On the mound he is 78-80 mph with a long ¾ arm delivery. Slider 67-70 with early break and in the strike zone. With strength and conditioning he could develop into a power bat.

Roy Thurman, OF/SS, North Central HS, 2017; 6 foot,  190 pounds, 4.25-H-1st from the right side. Athletic, young player. Long ¾ arm thrower with average strength and occasionally on target. Average hands, feet and ball transfer. Hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, explosive bat speed with a slight upper cut.  Pull hitter.

Tom DeCero, INF, Munster HS, 2015; 6 foot,  160 pounds, 4.44-H-1st, R/R, Athletic high school shortstop with good actions. Could throw from different arm angles (76 mph) with average hands, fluid feet and a clean exchange. Bat works, 84 mph exit speed. Will hit for average and occasional power.
