Tappan Zee 9, Nyack 1

A pair of young left-handers led Tappan Zee to a 9-1 win at Nyack on Tuesday. Junior Nick DelliPizzi got the start and pitched four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out two. Sophomore Justin Powell came on in the fifth and pitched the final three, allowing one run on four hits and no walks with two strikeouts. Tappan Zee’s pitching staff is made up of almost entirely juniors and sophomores, including four southpaws.

Powell allowed a run to score on Devin Samporani’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but with the bases loaded later in the inning, Powell buckled down to limit the damage. He struck out Noah Shaw looking on a low fastball to leave three runners stranded and maintain a 4-1 lead for the Dutchmen (4-2).

Senior shortstop Bryan Borruso was the offensive standout for TZ, finishing with four RBI. He hit a sac fly in the first, an RBI single in the third and a two-run triple in the seventh. Anthony Ricci, Nick Mante, Nick Cupo and Powell had the other RBI for the Dutchmen, as they knocked out Nyack starter Alex Knoebel after four innings.

The Indians (4-1) came into the game undefeated, having allowed just one earned run in their previous three games, including a no-hitter from junior Mike Hess against Pelham on Monday.
