2013 Underclass Spotlight: Joe Keween (Defiance HS)

Joe Keween, C, Defiance HS, Class of 2013

Defiance High School is well known for producing some of the best pitchers in the state.

To handle those pitchers, the program relies on talented catchers, such as junior Joseph Keween.

His scouting report from the Pre-Season Underclass notes:

Medium athletic build. Shows good baseball sense. Ran 5.41 40-yard dash. Shows excellent defensive skills. Shows lateral movement and blocks & accepts ball well. Good release (2.05-2.1 pop time with 73 mph arm velocity). Catches DI level arms at his high school. Shows good skills as a hitter (80 mph bat velocity off the tee). Lefty bat has good load and barrel direction into zone. His good lower half torque will project some power on next level.

While scouts are flocking to see talented arms such as senior Anthony Kidston (Louisville recruit) and junior Robert Zeigler, Keween hopes he can make an impression on them as well.

“I would like them to see me as the field general, the leader of the team and hard-nosed player.”

Reflecting on his abilities, the junior said, “I believe that I am very strong defensively and I am working very hard with everything else.  I am a good leader and I have a great mind for the game.”

Keween has set both personal and team goals for this spring.

“My main personal goal for this coming season is to become the starting catcher and also become all-league.”

He continued, “As a team I feel that we have great talent and we play well together.  For the team, I expect to win a state championship.”

This summer, Keween will be playing for the Defiance High School Acme Baseball team and the 17U Northwest Ohio Riverdogs.

He will be participating in the PBR Top Prospect Games on June 4th and 5th at Prasco Park.
