Prep Baseball Report

Inside the Recruitment: '15 RHP Alex Barnes commits to Ashland

Alex Barnes, RHP, Strongsville HS, Class of 2015

PBR: Why did you choose Ashland?

Barnes: I chose Ashland University because I like the campus, I can get a good education there, they have great facilities, they have great coaches, and they consistently have a good baseball program.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Barnes: In the end, it was between Walsh and Ashland.  I had been followed by Kent State, Toledo, Xavier and Eastern Michigan as well over the past year.

PBR: Where did the
Coach Schaly first see you? How did your relationship develop with him?

Barnes:  The first time I know that he saw me was at Ashland’s prospect camp this fall, although he may have seen me earlier than that.

PBR: Ashland is making several new upgrades to their baseball facility. How much of a role did that play in your decision?

Barnes:  It wasn't a factor in my decision.  I liked the campus and the facilities they have there as well as the coaching staff.
PBR: Now that you have your commitment out of the way, what are your goals both individually and for the team for the rest of your senior season?

Barnes:  My goals for the rest of my senior season I plan on continuing to work hard in the classroom, as well as, on the field, and to help the team go as far as we can in the playoffs.
PBR: What team do you play for in the summer and what is your most memorable experience?

Barnes:  I played for Ohio Elite 17U team.  My most memorable experience was playing in the 17U Perfect Game WWBA World Championships in Atlanta last summer.

PBR: What were your stats for last spring?

Barnes:  I was 4-1 for the season, although I had an 8 inning outing no decision against Brunswick where I did not give up a run and another 6 inning no decision in which I only gave up 1 run.  My ERA was around 0.62 against all teams outside of the two games (regular season and playoffs) against North Royalton and around 2.03 overall.

PBR: Who is the toughest hitter that you have faced in Ohio?

Barnes: Probably Garrett Strom and/or some other players on North Royalton’s team.
