PBR Spotlight Game: Nordonia vs Stow

Akron ??? On sunny and windy day in Akron, Archbishop Hoban high school was the host site for a triple header between Hoban, Nordonia and Stow. Game two featured Nordonia and Stow and the Bulldogs fought back from a 4-0 deficit for a 6-5 victory.

Nordonia struck first scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Two hit batters and back to back RBI singles by senior first baseman David Murray and sophomore third baseman Daniel Heiser put the Knights on the board first.

Heiser (pictured right) would finish the day with three RBI. He plated senior Brandon Talion with a single in the third inning and knocked senior Alex Alders in with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

Nordonia senior starting pitcher Chris Russ held the Stow offense in check for the first three innings. He did not allow a hit and struck out three batters. However, Russ tired in the fourth inning and the Bulldog bats came alive. With one out in the fourth junior catcher Owen Fankhauser sparked the offense with a deep double to left center. Back-to-back singles by Randy Smith and Andrew Groves cut the Knights lead to two. Following a fielder???s choice scoring Groves, junior Jake Dohar singled home Justin George to tie the game at four runs apiece.

The tie did not last long as Nordonia would score their fifth run off of Stow starting pitcher Nicholas O???Verko in the top of the fifth inning. The sophomore righty allowed a leadoff double to senior Alex Alders. O???Verko would then retire the next six batters he faced to keep the Knights lead to one.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning Dohar recorded his second hit of the game. A defensive miscue by Nordonia allowed Stow to again tie the game, this time at 5.

Uncommitted senior Tyler Hallam (pictured right) then took the game in his own hands. Coming on in relief of O???Verko, he shut the Knight offense down in the seventh and eighth innings striking out three batters. The right-handers work was not quite done. In the bottom of the eighth inning another error by the Knight defense put a runner on second base with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt and two intentional walks, Hallam would step to the plate with the bases loaded facing Sinclair commit Brandon Talion. Down 0-2 in the count, Hallam would rip a Talion fastball down the left field line giving the Bulldogs a walk off win.

With the win Stow improved to 4-6 and return to action on April 20th against Cuyahoga Falls.

With the loss Nordonia fell to 8-6. The Knights would go on to beat Hoban 5-4 later in the day improving their record to 9-6.
