Prep Baseball Report

Q and A with 2013 Mount Vernon Commit: Corey Gould (Marysville HS)

Corey Gould, INF, Marysville HS, Class of 2013

PBR: Why did you choose MVNU?

Gould: I wanted to go to a school that had a great academic reputation, as well as a very good baseball program. When I had my over-night, I really enjoyed the current players and felt very comfortable. My dad has known Coach Veale for years and has tremendous respect for him as a coach and a person. And lastly, my former teammate Sean Fleming is a player and loves it there. Of the schools that were interested in me, MVNU had everything that I wanted.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Gould: Ashland, Earlham, Washington and Jefferson, and MVNU were my final four.

PBR:  Where did Coach Veale first see you compete?

Gould: He saw me my freshman year at the State Legion Tournament when I played with current MVNU player Sean Fleming and he has seen me a few times since then.

PBR:  You play for the Ohio Elite in the summer, how much did that help for you to play on such a high profile travel team?

Gould: It gave me a lot of exposure to a lot of college coaches and we played in some of the best tournaments in the Midwest. That was huge as far as my development as a player, but probably the biggest advantage was playing with so many talented teammates. We have probably 10-12 kids off last year's team who will be playing in college.

PBR: What kind of role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?

Gould: I'm pretty versatile defensively so I can provide depth at several positions. Hopefully I can help wherever they need me. They will give me an opportunity to play early if I perform well.

PBR: What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that you will help MVNU baseball?

Gould: My strength right now is my offense; I have a good eye at the plate and get on base a lot. I have pretty good pop and decent speed so I expect to get on base and score a lot of runs at MVNU

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Gould: My dad has by far had the biggest impact on me. Growing up, my dad was my coach for most of the years, along with my legion coach when I got to high school. My dad had been a legion coach for about 15 years, and is a very knowledgeable baseball guy. Having him at home and at my baseball stuff allowed me to improve my game immensely throughout the years.

PBR: What were your stats for last summer?

Gould: This past summer I hit .320 with a .487 OBP with a .907 OPS

PBR: Who is the best player that you have faced in Ohio?

Gould: The best player that I have played against was Michael O'Neil from Olentangy Liberty who now goes to Michigan.
