PBR Spotlight Game: #40 Lakewood St. Edward vs #47 Amherst Steele

The Eagles of St. Edward defeated the Amherst Comets 5-1 yesterday to take the Lorain District title. The game was much closer than the final score indicates, as each team failed to capitalize on opportunities to have big innings.

The teams traded two scoreless innings to start the game, but were making contact and getting hits in the meantime. Clutch pitching and defense kept the game in check as both teams stranded runners on base.

Amherst starter junior RHP Nick DeJesus battled out of bases loaded jam in the second inning, getting junior shortstop Evan Kayser to line out to second to end the inning. Kayser was playing shortstop instead of his usual second base as he replaced fellow junior; leadoff hitter Joe Weisenseel, who suffered a potential season ending knee injury last week.

St. Edward finally capitalized in the third inning, scoring two runs on three hits.

It looked as if DeJesus was going to survive this inning as he got two quick outs after senior centerfielder led off the inning with a single to center. Senior catcher Mason DeAnna (Cincinnati commit) started the scoring with a sharp single to center, scoring the speedy Hegedus, who previously stole second base.

DeAnna advanced to third after a throwing error and a stolen base. He then scored on an infield error, making it 2-0. Junior third baseman Jake Budyka followed a HBP to load the bases again but Amherst junior LHP, Hunter Kuzak got a big strikeout in relief to end the inning.

Amherst got hits to leadoff innings 2-5 but each time, Eagle starter sophomore Quinn Lavelle pitched his way out of the jam.

The comets finally broke through the scoring drought in the top of the sixth inning on a walk by senior left fielder Jordan Williams (3-3 on the day), moved to second on an error and an infield single by freshman shortstop Hunter Cassidy. Williams then scored on a heads up play on a pop up to second base in shallow right field.

St. Edward came right back to extend its lead in the bottom of the inning on hits by; pinch hitter Charlie Hindulak, Kayser single in the hole at third and a bunt single by Hegedus.

Sophomore DH Kevin Finzer then got a big two out double to right-center field to drive in the final two runs of the game.

Lavelle then finished the game getting three of the next four hitters (another hit by Williams) to end the game and get the victory for the Eagles.

Amherst finishes a solid season as district runner-ups with an 18-11 record.

St. Edward Advances to next week’s Regional Semi-final matchup with traditional rival St. Ignatius at Cuyahoga Community College.
