Unsigned Senior Spotlight: Zach Speaker, Lincoln-Way West

By Ryan Quigley
Illinois Scouting Director

Currently ranked No. 112 in Illinois’ 2014 class.  One of the top seniors in the state still unsigned.  6-foot-4, 210-pound frame shows power potential down the line.  Impressive frame, with room to add more weight down the road.  Has the frame and the bat to play at the Division-1 level.  For the year hit .350, with four home runs, and ten doubles.  Strikeouts can creep up at times.

Speaker hits from the left side in a spread out stance, with an aggressive swing that shows gap-to-gap power.  He doesn’t get cheated, and led off the game with a line drive shot single to right off a 90 mph Latz offering.  His swing can get a little long at times.  His final two at bats were strikeouts, one on 89 up in the zone, the other on 89 buried inside underneath his hands.

Defensively shows adequate foot speed to stay at an outfield corner (7.37 60 runner at a past event), shows below average arm strength, and may be better suited at first base thanks to size.  Has shown soft hands fielding at first base in the past, which may be his future position at the next level.  Plays in the outfield due to South Suburban-bound Dan Brokop playing first base.
