Top Prospect Games: Team Gray Player Analysis



On June 23-24, we hosted the third annual Top Prospect Games at Grand Park in Westfield, IN.  The event consisted of 117 players, primarily within the 2016 and 2017 classes, which made up six teams (Red, White, Gold, Purple, Gray and Black).

Below we take a look at the players from Team Gray.

In Alphabetical Order

Phillip Archer, 1B/LHP, Floyd Central, 2016
:  The 6-foot-2 210 pound left-handed pitcher sat 76-78 with the fastball.  Fastball has some run.   Delivery has some effort with a ¾ arm slot.  Maintains good direction and an athletic finish.  Breaking ball was 64-66 with 2/8 break.  Change-up was 63-65 with some fade.  Offensively, he has a open setup and a leg kick.  Above average bat speed and good backside.  Tendency to pull off.   Exit velocity was 88mph.

Austin Begley, OF/INF, Lapel, 2016:  The 5-foot-9 150 pound ran a 7.06 60 yard dash.  Austin’s exit velocity was 78mph.   Offensively, he has a balanced setup with high hands.  Bat speed is average.  Short path to the ball.  Produced line drives during batting practice.  Defensively, Austin has fluid footwork and average arm strength.  Velocity from OF was 78mph.  

Beau Carpenter, 2B/OF, Leo, 2016:  The 5-foot-8 165 pound ran a 6.96 60 yard dash.  The left-handed hitting infielder possesses a tall open setup.  Long stride with good rhythm in his load.  Above average bat speed and good extension at the plate.  Exit velocity was 84mph.  Defensively,  throws across the infield were 73mph.  Beau has above average hands and fluid footwork.   Solid actions defensively.

Grant Fremion, OF/LHP, Guerin Catholic, 2017:  The 5-foot-11 165 pound outfielder ran a 6.94 60 yard dash.  At the plate, he has a balanced setup and a short stride.  Bat path is level with good extension.   Exit velocity was 81mph.  Defensively, hands are average with a clean exchange.  Arm action is high ¾.  On the mound, he has good balance and clean delivery.  Arm speed is average.  Fastball sat 75-78 and thrown for strikes.  Breaking ball was 64-68 with gradual break.   

Justin Hensley, 1B/3B, Brebeuf, 2016:  The 6-foot-2 205 pound corner infielder has a balanced setup with back load.  Stride is short and hands are fast. Possesses gap power. Exit velocity was 90mph. Strong hitter with some pop.  Defensively, hands are average and footwork is fluid.  Throws were accurate with average arm strength.

Brett Herndon, OF/RHP, Terra Haute North, 2016:  The 6-foot 175 pound outfielder ran a 6.55 60 yard dash.  Foot speed is a plus for him.  Outfield actions are quick and athletic.  Throws from the outfield topped at 90mph.  Throws had carry with accuracy.  Offensively, he hits from a balanced setup and a short stride.  Brett maintains good balance.  Exit velocity was 81mph.   

Ethan Hunter, SS, Terra Haute South, 2017:  The 5-foot-10 145 pound infielder ran a 6.79 60 yard dash.    At the plate, Ethan has a balanced setup with short stride.  Keeps good balance throughout with above average bat speed.  Exit velocity was 85mph.  Defensively, hands work with quick feet.  Throws were accurate with carry.  Velocity across was 81mph.  Solid actions. 

Kaleb Huxford, RHP, Rockville, 2016:  The 6-foot-2 160 pitcher showcased a quick arm with fastballs that sat 83-86.  Fastballs had run.  Curveball was 75-78 with hard, late break in 10/4 shape.  Slider was 74-76 with late break as well.   Fastball was erratic in zone.  Kaleb has some effort and maintains good direction throughout delivery.

Avery Itamura, C, Lawrence Central, 2016:  The 5-foot-7 160 pound ran a 7.41 60 yard dash.  Avery produced a 81mph exit velocity.  He has a line drive approach with above average bat speed.  Good rhythm with a long stride.  Defensively,  pop times ranged between 2.14-2.3  Velocity from crouch was 69.  Quick feet and average arm strength behind the plate.  Good instincts and receiving.

Jack Lang, INF, Hamilton Southeastern, 2016:  The 6-foot 168 pound ran a 6.93 60 yard dash.  Jack has average hands with a fluid exchange.  Arm strength is good.  Throws were accurate with carry.  Infield velocity was 80mph.  Offensively, he produced an exit velocity of 83mph.  He hits from a balanced setup and a back load.  Jack maintains good balance throughout swing.  Bat speed is above average.  Bat path is short to the ball.

Andrew Lawvere, C, Eastbrook, 2017:  The 5-foot-11 190 pound catcher ran a 7.92 60 yard dash.   Offensively, he has a balanced setup and back load.  Short stride and above average backside.  Fast hands.  Defensively, arm strength is a plus for Andrew.  Showed quick exchange and footwork.  Pop times ranged between 1.97 and 2.1.  Velocity behind plate was 78mph.  

Brodee Lipinski, RHP,  Western, 2017:  The 6-foot-3 175 pound pitcher sat 80-83 with some run.  Breaking ball was 70-71 with 10/4 shape and gradual break.  Deliverhy has some effort with average balance.  Direction is in line and he finishes athletically.  

James Meyer, RHP/SS, Zionsville, 2016:  The 6-foot-2 180 pound infielder ran a 7.11 60 yard dash.  Defensively, James showcased soft hands and a long exchange.  Footwork is quick.  Arm action is long and loose.  Throws were accurate and topped at 84mph.  Offensively, he has a balanced crouch and back load.  Exit velocity was 89mph.  On the mound, he sat 79-82.   Fastball has arm-side run and sink.  Filled up strike zone with multiple pitches.  Breaking ball was 67-68 with 10/4 shape.  Change-up sat 68-70 with fade.  Good deception in delivery.

Alex Mis, C, Munster, 2016:  The 5-foot-8 200 pound catcher ran a 7.2 60 yard dash.  Alex produced an exit velocity of 89mph.  He has a balanced setup with a back load.  Stride is long and hands are above average.  Gets good extension after contact on a uphill swing path.  Defensively, exchange is fluid and footwork is long.  Pop times ranged between 2.04-2.14.  Velocity behind plate was 72mph.  

Ben Pinegar, RHP, Zionsville, 2016:  The 6-foot 190 pound pitcher showcased a quick arm from a high ¾ arm slot.  Fastball topped at 87 and was thrown for strikes with late life.  Breaking ball was 71-74 with late, sharp break.  He maintains fastball arm speed.  Change-up was 78-79 with some fade, but erratic in zone.  Filled zone with FB and CB during his outing.

Trenton Stoner, INF, South Bend Clay, 2017:  The 6-foot-1 185 pound infielder ran a 7.51 60 yard dash.  Trenton showcased a open, balanced setup.  Stride is short and bat speed is above average.  Maintains good balance throughout swing.  Exit velocity was 86.  Defensively, hands are above average.  Footwork is fluid but heavy.  Arm action is short.   Velocity across infield was 74mph.  

Grant Theil, OF, Jasper, 2016:  The 6-foot-3 180 pound outfielder ran a 6.85 60 yard dash.  From the outfield, he has athletic actions and a short, loose arm action.  Footwork is fluid and exchange is quick.   Throws from outfield topped at 82.  Offensively, he registered an exit velocity of 85mph.  He has a balanced setup with a back load.  Short stride and fast hands.  Solid approach with several line drives to opposite field.  Keeps a level bat path with extension

Mitch Ubelhor, RHP, Avon, 2016:  The 6-foot-2 190 pound pitcher showcased a quick arm and good rhythm.  Shoulders tend to go uphill at times.  Fastball sat 85-87 with down action.  Mitch threw a heavy ball in his 2 innings.  Breaking ball was 75-78 with late break.  Change-up was 78-79 with some fade.  Mitch produced several ground balls in outing.  

Tyler Van Pelt, OF, Bloomington South, 2017:  The 5-foot-11 180 pound outfielder ran a 6.78 60 yard dash.   Defensively, Tyler has quick feet and average arm strength.  Throws were 81mph with some carry.  The LHH has a slight leg kick with an uphill swing plane.  Hands are fast.  Exit velocity was 90mph.  

JB Washburn, INF/RHP, Hamilton Southeastern, 2016:  The 6-foot-4 155 pound infielder ran a 7.09 60 yard dash.   Offensively, he hits from a balanced setup and short stride.  Hands drop during his load.  Bat speed is above average.  Registered an exit velocity of 83.  Defensively, he has above average hands with fluid footwork.  Exchange is long but plays through the ball well.  Throws across the infield topped at 80mph.    On the mound, FB sat 80-81 with a breaking ball at 69-71.  JB has good rhythm on the mound with some effort.  Fastball has slight run and is thrown for strikes.

Garrett Welch, OF/RHP, New Castle, 2017:  The 6-foot-3 175 pound outfielder ran a 7.12 60 yard dash.  He hits from a balanced setup and back load.  Stride is short and bat speed is above average.  Line drive approach.  Defensively, he showcased average hands and fluid footwork.  Throws were accurate with some carry.  Outfield velocity was 83mph.
