Canisius  4  - Timon 0

On a nice afternoon in Buffalo one of the top teams in New York State in Canisius took on Timon St. Jude for the first league game of their season.  The highlight of the night came from Junior Monmouth commit Dan Dallas.  Dallas was projected to be one of the top arms in the catholic league this spring and did not disappoint in his league opener.  He got the complete game shutout throwing all 7 innings and stacking up 10 strikeouts.  A fair amount of those strikeouts were due in large part to a solid curve ball that improved late in the game to give the Timon hitters little chance to put any rally together.  His opposition on the mound was sophomore LHP Trevor Brills from Timon who certainly held his own against a very strong Canisius lineup.  Brills was able to leave the Crusaders scoreless through 3 innings and it wasn’t until the 4th that Canisius was able to put any runs on the board.  The sophomore showed a lot of promise with a good movement on all his pitches.  He’ll be an exciting one to watch through the next few years.

Offensively this game was not a blowout by any stretch.  The Crusaders were able to plate 2 runs finally in the 4th inning after Junior Vinny Chiarenza drove in Senior Jack Herrmann with an RBI single.  Chiarenza then continued to steal two bags getting himself to third before scoring on an error from the Timon outfield.  With a 2 run lead in the 5th Junior Dan Dallas (who also had a double to center in the first) drove in Junior Niagara University commit Michael Gabriele with a SAC Fly to center.  Although just when Canisius had a chance to really run away with the game Rogers came in in relief for Timon and got back to back strikeouts to stop the bleeding.  Canisius got their final run in the 7th inning off the bat of Vinny Chiarenza with his second RBI single of the night.  Another standout at the plate was Junior Centerfielder Zach Mitchell.  Mitchell also had 2 hits on the day and showed above average speed on the base paths.  Mitchell, Chiarenza, and Dallas are just a few of the juniors in this lineup that are going to keep Canisius strong through the next two seasons.

Though I’m sure this will not be Canisius best showing offensively, the junior loaded team showed why they are the team to beat in their league this year.  They’ve got strong pitching, solid bats throughout the lineup and a deep bench.  They’ve got all the makings of a team that can make a great run in a playoff setting.
