Ohio Insider: Initial Class of 2020 Player Rankings (April)

While it’s early, PBR Ohio is releasing the initial rankings for the Class of 2020.

Over the next few years, this list will continue to change as players develop and new players come into the fold.

For now, we focus on an early crop of standout performers that we have seen over the past year.

Sitting At The Top

St. Edward OF/INF Mac Wainwright leads the pack as Ohio’s No. 1 Class of 2020 prospect and No. 43 overall in the PBR coverage area.

Over the winter, we saw him on two occasions at the Freshman Free event in Youngstown and again at his summer program’s scout day.

The big right-handed hitter has a swing that sticks out loudly amongst his peers.

This spring, Wainwright is playing on the varsity squad for one of Ohio’s top high school programs.

Big Stick from the Left-Side

The complement to Wainwright comes in the form of Uniontown Lake left-handed hitter Carson Nicodemo.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound first-baseman hit our radar last spring at the Junior Future Prospect Camp and went on to be a top performer at the Future 50 event in the summer.

He was recently featured in Shooter Hunt’s Hot List, sits at No. 2 in Ohio’s rankings and No. 46 overall in the PBR coverage area.

Nicodemo doesn’t look like a freshman when he’s swinging the bat. His loading sequence his fluid and he’s efficient prior to his launch. The barrel is on plane early and goes through contact with authority. The ball explodes off his bat.

Pitt Commit

No. 3 Harrison Central RHP/IF Andrew Clelland was the first member of Ohio’s 2020 class to commit to a Division I program.

The 6-foot-3, 170-pound prospect was a standout performer at our Future 50 event heading into his freshman year and showed well again in December at our Freshman Free event in Dayton. He has continued to develop with his skill set as well as his frame and offers plenty of versatility as he matures.

The Next Standout from Northwest Ohio?

No. 4 Findlay RHP/IF Patrick Dillon was one of the elite performers at last summer’s Future 50 Showcase.

At the time, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound prospect showed obvious quickness in his arm, plenty of projectability and is already sitting in the low-80s.

Another Big Arm From Mentor

Former Mentor Cardinal Kade McClure has turned into a weekend arm for the Louisville Cardinals.

Could No. 5 Chad Rogers be the next big Mentor right to enter the spotlight?

At Force Ohio’s Winter Scout Day, the 6-foot-3, 181-pound righty was into the low-80s with plenty of ceiling left to reach.

Rounding out the Top 10

Seth Logue+ No. 6 RHP/IF Seth Logue (Moeller HS) first emerged on our radar last year at the Junior Futures Prospect Camp and showed well again this winter at the Midland Scout Day. He is the top two-way prospect that we have seen in this class. His skills are above average as both an infielder as well as a pitcher on the mound. He is the younger brother of current UK LHP Zach Logue.

+ No. 7 OF Jordan Stevens (University School) stood out at the Freshman Free event this winter in Youngstown. He has an advanced swing from the right side and athleticism that stands out amongst his peers.

+ No. 8 RHP/IF Justin Hornschemeier (Moeller HS) is one of the more projectable arms in the class. He was a standout performer at the Freshman Free event this winter in Columbus. At 6-foot-2, 195-pounds, the big righty has a fastball that sits in the low-80s and complements it with a mid-60s breaking ball with good depth.

+ No. 9 LHP Patrick Suter (Moeller HS) is the third prospect in the top 10 to hail from the Crusader program. This winter, we had a chance to see him at the Midland Scout Day. The 6-foot-3, 187-pound southpaw throws from a high slot, topping out at 80 mph. He complements his fastball with a big 66-69 mph breaking ball that he commands for strikes.

+ No. 10 RHP/IF Thomas Stickney (Sycamore HS) stood out at the Cincinnati Riverbats Scout Day this winter. The 5-foot-11, 150-pound prospect has a versatile skill set that will make him an interesting prospect to follow over the next few years. At present, he shows obvious quickness in his arm with a fastball that sat in the low-80s while mixing in a tight 66-68 mph breaking ball. At the plate, the righty swinger creates solid energy with his lower half and showed impressive bat speed through the zone.
