OUTLOOK:

The Scottsboro Wildcats, fresh off a state playoff berth in 2019, return four positional starters and four pitchers for the 2020 season. The pitching staff should be a strength for the 2020 squad as the everyday lineup will be young but talented for Coach Jess Smith. Senior C Dalton Wood will be a bat in the lineup that the Wildcats will depend on after leading the team in homeruns with five a year ago. Wood also shows solid catch and throw skills from behind the plate. ’20 RHP Lane Pitts was mainly used out of the bullpen in 2019 but his role should change into a starter this year. He shows a mid 80’s fastball. ’20 RHP/MIF Tanner Barclay has had a fantastic offseason and has developed well in all areas. He should play a major role in 2020 as an infielder and on the mound. Barclay is a very high academic guy and also provides leadership for the team. Senior OF Kyle Murphy is speedy player that covers a ton of ground in the outfield. The Wildcats are needing Murphy to have a big year with the bat. ’21 INF/C Ethan Wininger is a definite candidate to be a run producer this spring. The junior shows some major juice at the plate and is another player that should be a run producer this season. Junior INF/RHP Cam Matthews has worked very hard in the offseason and gotten a god bit stronger. He has some power at the plate and will also see time on the mound as well. Another junior, OF/RHP Brandon Brewer has gotten stronger and put on some weight since last season which has increased the velocity on his fastball. He is a high ceiling arm and could see a lot of innings on the mound this year. Two sophomores to keep an eye on are MIF/RHP Everett Loveless and LHP/1B/OF Landon Grider. Loveless is an extremely talented young player with nice arm strength on the mound that threw varsity innings last year as a freshman. His role could greatly increase this year. Grider is a crafty lefty on the mound that also saw time on the mound in 2019. He commands pitches well and also has surprising power at the plate. He will see time on the mound and could play his way into the lineup at 1B or in the outfield.
