Today’s unsigned senior spotlight is RHP/OF Brett Wolford of Gardner-Edgerton HS.  Wolford toiled a 6-inning gem Tuesday against Blue Valley HS one of the top teams in the state.  In the game he surrendered only two hits, one run while striking out 10 Tigers.  In addition to pitching the left-right utility player has seen time at catcher, middle infield and in the outfield for Edgerton over the last two years.  Below is Rob Fleeup’s scouting report on Wolford from last Tuesday:

“Wolford is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound strong, athletic left-hand hitting utility player who still has room to fill out as he matures.  On the mound he has clean arm action and mechanics that he repeated consistently. Once he reaches his balance point he has a short pause before driving to the plate with a smooth easy delivery and athletic landing. This consistency allowed him to pound the strike zone for six innings. Commanding the black with a fastball that worked in the 82-83 mph range with glove side cut while also freezing hitters with the tailing action.

During the fourth and fifth inning, Wolford touched 84 a few times and 85 once.  His 11/5 breaking ball showed some depth and sharpness to it when thrown with near fastball arm speed and a velocity of 68-69.  When he wanted to Wolford took some off of it to sweep it in on left-hand hitters at 65 mph. He used his 72-74 mph change-up sparingly and showed some feel for it as he kept it down in the zone.

At the plate he showed a good balance and short compact swing from the left side with the ability to make contact versus above average fastball velocity. We also had an opportunity to see Brett Wolford at the JCCC showcase in January where he ran a 7.04 60-yard dash, showed an 81 mph arm in infield workouts and 84 exit velocity during hitting drills.”

Wolford has talked to a number of four-year schools and junior colleges – and is open to either route - but has yet to make any final decisions college-wise.  Clearly his talents extend beyond well beyond the baseball field as he is currently ranked #1 in his graduating class of 283 Edgerton Class of 2014 students.  He also scored a 28 ACT.
