Pre Season Preview - The Meadows Mustangs

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

With the season around the corner, we are concluding our team previews with the Meadows School.  The Meadows welcomes new head coach Andy Concepcion.  Coach Andy is a long-time Vegas Valley baseball man who returns after spending the last few years coaching high school baseball in Utah.  He takes over the class 2A program that finished 13-9 a year ago, missing the post season.  Having recently accepted the position, he is still evaluating personnel but is optimistic about the Mustangs upcoming season.  One thing for certain his passion for the game and his program will bring a ton of energy to The Meadows

2019 Outlook: Coach Concepcion and the Mustangs are looking forward to the upcoming 2019 campaign.  Coming off a winning season a year ago, they return seven starters, including Sam Kaplan, a Cornell commit.  Kaplan is a physical third baseman with power potential and will hit in the middle of the Mustangs lineup. Classmates, Justin Tanaka, a catcher and Eshaan Verma, pitcher first baseman round out The Meadows more veteran returners.  Junior, shortstop Jerry Appelhans swung the bat well in 2018 and Coach Concepcion is looking for him to build on that success. Likewise, fellow infielder, Trey Covell gained valuable experience and will play an important part in the team’s success.  In spite of the pure numbers, Coach Concepcion will count on juniors, Brett Lieuallen, Davidson Ruffy and Brennan Medina to grow from their experience a year ago and make larger contributions this season.  One of the Mustangs rising starts is utility man Corey Burkhead.  Coach believes in this youngster and thinks he not only has a bright future in the program but in the game as well.

One thing for certain, a team coached by Andy Concepcion will play the game hard with energy and compete pitch in and pitch out.  What the Mustangs may lack in talent and experience the will make up for in work ethic and attitude.  Don’t be surprised to see Coach Andy and the Mustangs making some noise by the end of the year.
