Inside the Recruitment: '15 RHP Joey Murray (Dublin Coffman) commits to Kent State

Joey Murray, RHP, Dublin Coffman, Class of 2015

PBR: Why did you choose Kent?

Murray:  I picked Kent state because the coaching staff was great and they run a great program.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Murray:  the other two schools I was considering were Cincinnati and Wright State.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you and how did your relationship develop?

Murray:  They first saw me play at a PBR event this August and they also saw me two more times when I played for the Midwest Redbirds this fall.  After the final time I pitched at Kent State, Coach Birkbeck gave me his number and that’s where it all started.

PBR: Was the recruiting process what you expected?

Murray:  Not at all due to the fact that I missed most of my spring season and about half of my summer season due to illness.  The recruiting process did not even start for me until this August which is when the first school called me.

PBR: How does it feel to be a part of a Division 1 baseball program?

Murray:  It feels amazing.  It’s been my biggest goal for a very long time and it’s the greatest feeling knowing that I get to play Division 1 baseball.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was the most memorable experience from this summer?

Murray:  I played for the Columbus Cobras this summer and will be with Ohio Elite next summer.  My favorite moment was our last tournament in Virginia, in my final game I struck out 14 batters with one walk.  The whole team had a lot of fun down there and played very well.

PBR:  What person has the great impact on your baseball career and why?

Murray:  The person with the greatest impact on my baseball career is my high school coach.  Coach Saunders has shown me how to set a good example as well as become a better baseball.  He was also a huge part in the recruiting process for me.  I could not have done it without him.

PBR: What were your stats this spring season?

Murray: Since I missed most of my spring season I only had about 4 starts.  I had a No hitter against Hilliard Davidson, a win against Grove City, and gave up no runs and two hits to Olentangy Liberty in 5 innings of work.
